The Habit Of Virtue
My initial introduction to Edmund Burke was in Russell Kirk's "The Conservative Mind: From Burke to Eliot", in which Burke is identified as the first and most important in a line of British and American conservative thinkers. Kirk motivated me to read more about Burke and then to read Burke himself. Burke, like C.S. Lewis, is one whose writings have become so much a part of me that I am constantly in danger of failing to make appropriate attribution.
"The current New Criterion" includes an essay by Gertrude Himmelfarb in which she describes how her evaluation of Edmund Burke as political thinker has improved since she first wrote about him. Burke is sometimes characterized as a reactionary. Himmelfarb:
.... No one could attach that label to the Burke who, as a Whig, not a Tory, sided with parliament and party against the King and his ministers. Nor does it apply to the Burke who was a friend and disciple of Adam Smith, who is reputed to have said that Burke was "the only man who, without communication, thought on these topics [a free economy] exactly as he [Smith] did." Nor does it apply to the Burke who defended John Wilkes, the radical Member of Parliament who was expelled from the House of Commons for libeling the king. Nor to the Burke who conducted a long campaign against Warren Hastings and the East India Company for abusing their charter and exploiting the people of India. Nor to the Burke who joined William Wilberforce in the campaign to abolish the slave trade. Nor, most notably, to the Burke who was an eloquent champion of America before and during the American Revolution.Burke believed that traditions-the habits of a culture-are often the wisdom of generations and that it is foolish to discard them without discovering their origins. Since religion embodies many of those traditions, it is important to society quite apart from its spiritual claims. Human beings are religious creatures and the vacuum created by the absence of religious belief will be filled, often by something very bad indeed. Himmelfarb:
In my early essay, I had quoted derisively his remark "superstition is the religion of feeble minds." But that bald statement is preceded by the warning that an excess of superstition is a "very great evil." And it is followed by the assertion that an "intermixture" of superstition and religion is desirable, "else you will deprive weak minds of a resource found necessary to the strongest." This idea, of an "intermixture" of superstition and religion, seemed to many at the time (as it still seems to many today) demeaning to religion, and, worse, demeaning to those in need of religion-religion "pour les autres", for children, or servants, or others with "weak minds."
As if anticipating that criticism, Burke went on to say that religion is not "a mere invention to keep the vulgar in obedience." On the contrary, it is a "resource" for the "strongest" as well as the weak. Indeed, religion is of the very nature of man: "Man is by his constitution a religious animal." To deprive man of his religion would be to create a void that could only be filled by "some uncouth, pernicious, and degrading superstition," a superstition that would not complement and support religion but rather subvert and degrade it.
As religion and superstition are a part of a continuum, so are reason and prejudice-by "prejudice" he meant not what we mean by it, hostility against particular people or races, but rather all those conventional beliefs and popular opinions that do not meet the strict test of reason. It is in this sense that he spoke of the church establishment as "the first of our prejudices."
We are afraid to put men to live and trade each on his own private stock of reason, because we suspect that this stock in each man is small, and that the individuals would do better to avail themselves of the general bank and capital of nations, and of ages. Thoughtful men [instead of exploding prejudices]... try to discover the latent wisdom which prevails in them, [and] think it more wise to retain the prejudice, with the reason involved, than to cast away the coat of prejudice, and to leave nothing but the naked reason. Prejudice is of ready application in the emergency; it previously engages the mind in a steady course of wisdom and virtue, and does not leave the man hesitating in the moment of decision, sceptical, puzzled, and unresolved. Prejudice renders a man's virtue his habit; and not a series of unconnected acts. Through just prejudice, his duty becomes a part of his nature. This was an audacious idea to present to enlightened men in an enlightened age-a challenge to those French philosophes who would indeed leave men with nothing but their "private stock of reason," their "naked reason." It was all the more audacious because Burke's continuum of reason and prejudice-prejudice with the "reason involved," with the "latent wisdom" in it-had the effect of creating a commonality among human beings. It was the "common feelings," the "natural feelings" of men, the "wisdom of unlettered men," that permitted him to speak so confidently of "the true moral equality of mankind." [more]Anyone interested in political theory will find the essay instructive.

Dracsatan
[from http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/2669/Satan commentary.html ] A Commentary about Satan: Anthropomorphic & Symbolic By Draconis Blackthorne I assert that when enough mental force is placed towards the conjuration, or manifestation of an archetype, it is possible to start a momentum that can effect the lives of those who subscribe to them. Such as xoids realizing their own fates. I have formulated My own particular archetypes & characteristics to symbolic deities, who, I see more as Comrades, brothers, sisters, & friends, rather than "lords", & whatnot. If one creates something in the ethers, one is responsible for it, & must resonate with it. I have seen "Satan" as MY HAND in the ethers, the manifestation of MY WILL. An extension of Myself, really. Thus molding those Dark earthly forces into a dynamically usable, & perhaps more relatable, force. No worship going on here, nope. Only RESONANCE. If anything, or anyone, is worshipped, it is Myself. Remember, as Satanists, there are no metaphysical gods {or goddesses} above us. We choose our own PHYSICAL masters & slaves, depending upon your disposition. I have, however, USED terms such as "Satan knows", "By Satan!", "Great shades of Satan!". & "By Lucifer's beard!" as humorous expressions. My creations of what I call "mythaphor", such as that read in Epinox, is just that, myth+metaphore blended in a highly imaginative amalgam. As you know, Epinox explains Evolution in a psychodramatic context. I Am not implying a literal scenario, as xians do with their blind faith. These are very fine & subtle points in Magic that should be addressed, lest there be any misunderstanding. We do the Atheist one better, as we are not afraid of using myriad archetypes to artfully & symbolically represent ideals. Needless to say, in the Ritual Chamber, Satan may very well be considered anthropomorphically. Personally, I seem to remain in a mystical mindset quite often, as extraordinary natural phenominon occurs routinely in My life. Anyhow, I Hail The Forces of Darkness, the Powers of Magic, & the Satanic ideal with a proudly upraised Cornu. Hail Victory! Hail Satan! HAIL DRACONIS!END

New Hieromartyr Sabbas Who Was Skinned Alive By The Ustashi 1941

Vladyka Sabbas was born on 6 July 1884 in Mol to the family of Stephen and Elizabeth Trlaich and was baptized Svetozar. After studying at grammar school and then seminary in Sremski Karlovtsy, he graduated from the faculty of law at the University of Belgrade. He was ordained deacon and then priest in 1909. From 1909 to 1927 Fr Svetozar served as a parish priest. In early 1927 he was appointed to an administrative post at the Holy Synod and then became its secretary. Widowed, in 1929 he took his monastic vows with the name of Sabbas and became rector and archimandrite of the Monastery of Krushedol. He served there until 1934, when he was appointed Vicar-Bishop of Sremski. He was consecrated bishop in Sremski Karlovtsy on 30 September 1930 by Patriarch Barnabas of Serbia. As Patriarchal Vicar, Vladyka Sabbas chaired the diocesan council of the Archdiocese of Belgrade-Karlovtsy until November 1936 and from then until early 1937 he chaired the ecclesiastical court. Then, on 4 September 1938, he was appointed Bishop of Gornji Karlovac, with his residence in Plashkom.
The German invasion of Yugoslavia and the ensuing proclamation of an Independent Croatian State saw Plashkom occupied by the Italians, but at the end 1941, it was handed over to the Croat Ustashi. On this, Bishop Sabbas and nine priests were taken hostage. On 23 May 1941 the Ustashi occupied the bishop's residence and expelled the bishop. On 8 June the notorious executioner Josip Tomlenovich appeared at the residence and ordered any diocesan money and papers of importance to be handed over to the Ustashi. Bishop Sabbas was ordered to leave the town and head for Serbia. However, he refused to do this and stated that he could not abandon his diocese and his people.
On 17 June 1941 Vladyka was arrested together with other well-known Serbs and priests who did not wish to leave the place of their ministry. The Ustashi locked their prisoners into a cowshed and set an armed guard. For one month all those arrested and especially Bishop Sabbas were subjected to humiliation and torture on a daily basis. They were then sent to the notorious concentration camp at Gospich. The prisoners were taken from the railway station at Gospich to the local prison and again subjected to humiliation and torture.
In the first half of August 1941 about 2,000 Serbs were taken from Gospich to Velebita, Bishop Sabbas among them. It is supposed that he was murdered there, at the same time as about 8,000 other Serbs, in August 1941. The Holy Synod of the Serbian Church constantly, but unsuccessfully, called for the forces of occupation to explain what had happened to Bishop Sabbas and other Serbian bishops on the territory of the Independent Croatian State and tried to obtain their release.
Unfortunately, we have no exact information about the circumstances of the martyrdom of Bishop Sabbas. However, the Serbian historian, Velibor Dzhomich in his book, "Ustashi Crimes Against Serbian Priests", quotes a testimony which may throw some light on the question. According to this, a Fr Iovan Silashki wrote the following in an issue of "The Banat Herald" newspaper:
HIEROMARTYR SABBAS (TRLAICH), BISHOP OF GORNJI KARLOVAC
IN 1941 THE GORNOKARLOVATSKY DIOCESE WAS UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE DREADFUL USTASHI REGIME. THE BISHOP AND THE PRIESTS WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE UNDESIRABLES AND THAT THEY MUST ABANDON THEIR FLOCKS. THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF ZAGREB, ALOYSIUS STEPINAC, OPENLY TOLD VLADYKA THAT HE MUST LEAVE "CROATIAN" KARLOVAC, OTHERWISE HE WOULD BE LIQUIDATED. VLADYKA ANSWERED HIM: "EVEN IF IT COSTS ME MY HEAD, I WILL NOT ABANDON MY PEOPLE!"
SOON IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP WAS NOT JOKING. VLADYKA SABBAS WAS ARRESTED AND HORRIBLY TORTURED. DURING THE TORTURES AND BEATINGS IN PLASHKOM, THE USTASHI USED A GRAMOPHONE TO PLAY THE HYMN, "AS MANY AS HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED IN CHRIST, HAVE PUT ON CHRIST."
WHEN THEY TOOK VLADYKA TO HIS PLACE OF EXECUTION, HIS MOTHER STOOD IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH AND WAITED FOR HIM. SHE WANTED TO SEE HER SON FOR ONE LAST TIME AND MAKE HER FAREWELLS. HOWEVER, THE EXECUTIONERS DID NOT ALLOW HER TO DO THIS. VLADYKA NEVERTHELESS BLESSED HIS MOTHER, HIS LEGS TIED, AND WENT TO HIS DEATH.
A FEW YEARS AFTER THIS A STRANGER WALKED INTO THE CHURCH IN BASHAIDA, WHERE VLADYKA HAD SERVED. HE SPOKE TO THE POSTMASTER SABBAS SARAVOLETS.
"DID YOU KNOW VLADYKA SABBAS TRLAICH," ASKED THE STRANGER, "I HEARD THAT HE WAS PRIEST HERE."
"OF COURSE, VLADYKA WAS MY TEACHER. I'M GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR EVERYTHING I HAVE MANAGED TO DO IN LIFE. HOW DO YOU KNOW VLADYKA?"
"I WAS AN EYEWITNESS OF HIS SUFFERINGS," ANSWERED THE STRANGER. "THE USTASHI BUTCHERS TOOK VLADYKA TO A CLEARING AND CONTINUED TO TORTURE HIM THERE. THEY TORE HIS SKIN OFF HIM AND THEN COVERED HIM WITH SALT. THEN THEY BURIED HIM ALIVE, WITH JUST HIS HEAD PROTRUDING, BROUGHT AN IRON HARROW AND PULLED IT ACROSS HIS HEAD UNTIL HE GAVE UP HIS SOUL TO GOD. WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT, I DON'T KNOW. MAYBE THE USTASHI THREW HIM INTO ONE OF THE MANY PRECIPICES THERE, WHICH THEY USED AS GRAVES FOR THE SERBS. SO EVEN IN DEATH HE WASN'T SEPARATED FROM HIS PEOPLE."
In 2000 Hieromartyr Sabbas was glorified by the Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church as a hieromartyr. A true son of his people, he showed himself to be a true pastor, laying down his life for his flock, and his ministry was crowned by martyrdom. His memory is celebrated on April 22.

Wisdom And The Will Of God
This is my last post on this subject, I think.
Here are the conclusions that Garry Friesnen comes to in his book:
Here is Garry Frienen's proposed alternative:
1. In those areas specifically addressed by the Bible, the revealed commands and principles of God (His Moral will) are to be obeyed.
(I agree 100%.)
2. In those areas where the Bible gives no command or principle (non-moral decisions), the believer is free and responsible to choose his own course of action. Any decision made within the moral will of God is acceptable to God.
(This is the "Where the Bible speaks, we speak. Where the Bible is silent, we're silent" thinking coming through. I found it interesting that he isn't a church of Christer but a United Evangelical Free Churcher. As you know if you have been reading my blog, I disagree with this one. However, I do agree to an extent. Unless you are prompted by God otherwise, you need to make a decision based upon common sense and wisdom. Never can the decision you make go against the teachings of Scripture.)
3. In nonmoral decisions, the objective of the Christian is to make wise decisions on the basis of spiritual expediency.
(I would repeat what I just said.)
4. In all decisions, the believer should humbly submit in advance, to the outworking of God's sovereign will as it touches each decision.
(I believe that all believers should humbly submit to the promptings of God, not just the results of his will being worked out. Some times our actions prohibit God's will from being implemented in our lives. He waits patiently for the faithful to rise up in order to shower them with the blessing of his will being manifested through them. God is patient, and he usually doesn't force his will. This does not go against the teaching in Romans that "God uses all things for the good of those who love him." It just means that all things aren't always what God intended them to be. No matter what is done God will use those events to create the world into what he wants it to be.
The flood could be a good example of this. It wasn't "good" for those clawing the outside of the ark as they were trying to escape the raging water. But it was "good" for those who loved God.
Or how about the persecution of the church in Jerusalem. It wouldn't appear to be a "good" thing at first. It wouldn't be perceived as good to those whose family members were executed. But for overarching community of God is was good. It forced the good news of the kingdom to be spread throughout the world.
This is the conclusion I have just arrived at. It could be wrong. I'm just throwing it out there. On the collective level, everything always works out for the good of those who love God. On the individual level, it doesn't always happen that way. Thoughts?

Watch out for the potholes.

Calendar Creation For Fantasy Settings

MONTHS OF THE YEAR
"The calender common on the eastern continent of the world was established by the astronomers of ancient Mizraim, and was later adapted and spread by the Urromite empire. The calender is thus an amalgam of conditions and customs, as well as languages. "
JINNUARY - This month is named for the Jinn, who were honored in ancient Mizraim.
PHANTOMUARY - This month was an important month for dealing with spirits and the undead, esp. purifying places from haunting and unwanted spiritual influences.
MAAHES - The first month of the campaigning period was named for the Mizraimite god of war. Sometimes connected with Hextor.
ALLUVINTH - The first month of the annual inundation of the Satet River, it is also appropriately the rainy month in many lands.
MAIDENTH - "Month of the Maiden," the "specific maiden" here varies by region and culture, though originally she was Anqet. It is a general time of feminine coming-out, romance, engagement, and marriage. Among the tolk, it is dedicated to Kora.
JONDALLANTH - "Month of Yondalla" (from an archaic spelling*), a month honoring her and her domains. High month of the tolk.
JEIRONEONTH - "Month of Heironeous" (from an archaic spelling*), a month honoring him and his domains. The month of knightings and tournaments.
ARCHONTIC - named for the first Urromite ruler, high month of the imperial calendar.
SERPENFER - named for the festival of Usaht, which is honored in secret rites by her all-female worshippers.
ORCOVER - name commemorates the thwarting of the terrible threat of Orcus, when he sent orcs into the world a millennium ago, in this month.
NECREMBER - This month was dedicated to all elements of burial and the ancestor worship that are not covered by Phantomuary; most solemn month of ancient Mizraim.
DELIGHNTH - The month of delights, the month of the winter festival.
* I have not quite decided whether these are archaisms, derivations, vulgarizations, or simply variant spellings. But I think it is realistic, e.g., we got "Jehovah" from Yahweh, "Jesus" from Yeshua, and in Latin Jerusalem = Hierosolyma.
NB. I called the halfings, "tolk", in honor of their originator.
