She was Catholic and her ascent to the throne was not what the Reformers wanted, as they knew that she would try to end the rising of the Reformation in England. The only option some of them saw as a possible solution was to raise Lady Jane Grey to the throne. Lady Jane Grey, however, "wept, swooned, and protested that if any one should scruple to steal a shilling how much more to usurp a crown". (7) However, her parents did not listen to her arguments and wanting her to wear the crown, forced her to do so. Lady Jane Grey was only sixteen years old. Mary's forces easily took Lady Jane Grey and all those who supported her and placed them in the Tower of London. This was the beginning of Mary's Reign of Terror. Lady Jane Grey wrote a letter to Queen Mary in which she "freely confessed that she had committed in accepting from those deemed wise by all the realm, a crown which was not theirs to bestow". (8) Mary was moved by it, and was even willing to show mercy to Jane Grey only if she accepted to take the Catholic Mass; Mary even sent her archbishop to try to convince Lady Jane Grey to accept the sacraments of the Catholic faith. Lady Jane Grey stood firmly on the principle of Sola Scriptura and justification by faith alone; thus rejecting any other means of salvation saying: I deny that (good works as a mean to obtain salvation), and I affirm that faith only saves; but it is meet for a Christian to do good works, in token that he follows the steps of His Master, Christ, yet may we not say that we profit to our salvation; for when we have done all, we are unprofitable servants, and faith only in Christ's blood saves us. (9) Lady Jane Grey was young but she was strong in her faith and convictions; and even though she had been promised life and not death by a human, she would rather die and have the Life that God promises to those who stand firm to the end. Jane Grey wrote then a letter to her father in which she said, Father, although it has pleased God to hasten my death by you, by whom my life should rather have been lengthened, yet I can so patiently take it, as I yield God more hearty thanks for shortening my woeful days, than if all the world had been given unto my possession... to me there is nothing than can be more welcome, than from this vale of misery to aspire to that heavenly throne of all joy and pleasure with Christ our Saviour... (10) Two days after her meeting with Mary's archbishop, on February 12, 1154, Lady Jane Grey was martyred for her beliefs as well as for political reasons. But before mounting on the scaffold, she asked the chaplain if she could recite Psalm fifty-one, and then pronounced her last words: I here die a true Christian woman and I trust to be saved by the blood of Christ, and by no other means. (11) This young woman stood firmly, facing death, not with a bitter heart against her earthly father, or against the Queen, but with her eyes fixed on Eternity, on Jesus Christ. Her heart had not been set on earthly treasures but on the things that are not from this world; and her hope did not rest in her actions, but on the saving work of Jesus Christ. Brian Stokes Mitchell At Orchestra Hall

In my first theatrical experience of the new year, I saw Tony award winning Broadway actor Brian Stokes Mitchell at Orchestra Hall last weekend. I know him best as the voice of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in the original cast of "Ragtime". I've never seen him in the role but it's one of my favorite soundtracks (which I've been listening to a lot lately in anticipation of Park Square Theatre's upcoming production featuring an all-star cast of local talent). It was one of those rare experiences when one of your favorite soundtracks comes to life, when a voice and a song that's so familiar is live right there in front of you (like when I saw Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal in "RENT" a few years ago).

Brian performed with the fabulous Minnesota Orchestra, led by Sarah Hicks and her super-toned arms (I want that workout!). To begin the show, the orchestra performed a medley from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel", and then Brian appeared to sing "Some Enchanted Evening" from "South Pacific". His voice in person is everything it is on recordings: deep, rich, expressive, gorgeous. Not only that, but he's also handsome, charming, funny, and entertaining; an engaging performer. As expected, he sang a selection of musical theater classics, some from musicals that he's appeared in ("The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha", his encore) and some that he hasn't ("Soliloquy" from "Carousel", "Don't Rain on My Parade" from "Funny Girl"). But he also sang some standards from outside the musical theater world ("How Long has This Been Going On, Waters of March," a Gershwin medley). In an interesting twist, he blended the Duke Ellington classic "Take the A Train" with "Another Hundred People (Just Got Off of the Train)" from Sondheim's "Company."

Brian was involved in writing the children's alphabet book "Lights on Broadway", and he sang the single that goes along with the book. "I Was Here" was written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (the composers of "Ragtime") and tells about the life of an actor.

One of my favorite moments was when Brian put down his mic to sing another song from "South Pacific", "This Nearly Was Mine." With the orchestra playing softly behind him, his voice soared through the beautiful acoustics of Orchestra Hall. It was magical. Proverbs 301 4 Believe

We are back from Salt Lake City! What a blessed experience meeting my latest granddaughter and seeing the Blakely family now grown to five! I'm amazed at how Beau and Penelope have welcomed their new little sister with such love and gentleness! The trip home in the minivan with all six of us was such a treat as we took an adventure through Zion National Park in all its glory! Now, it's back to school for Nanny! And back to our study of the Proverbs.

In this chapter of Proverbs we find a collection of sayings which are the words of a man called Agur. According to Jon Courson, in his "Application Commentary, Old Testament, Vol. 2" (P. 268), the name Agur means gatherer. These, then, are the sayings that he gathered. He starts his proverbs with questions about God:

"THE MAN DECLARES, I AM WEARY, O GOD;"

" I AM WEARY, O GOD, AND WORN OUT. "

"SURELY I AM TOO STUPID TO BE A MAN."

" I HAVE NOT THE UNDERSTANDING OF A MAN. "

"I HAVE NOT LEARNED WISDOM,"

" NOR HAVE I KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY ONE. "

"WHO HAS ASCENDED TO HEAVEN AND COME DOWN?"

" WHO HAS GATHERED THE WIND IN HIS FISTS?"

"WHO HAS WRAPPED UP THE WATERS IN A GARMENT?"

" WHO HAS ESTABLISHED ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH?"

"WHAT IS HIS NAME, AND WHAT IS HIS SON'S NAME?"

" SURELY YOU KNOW!" (Proverbs 30:1-4)

Courson points out that Job uttered similar questions in Job 38. These are the big questions of man as he searches for his place in the universe. These are the questions of seekers. "WHO HAS ASCENDED TO HEAVEN AND COME DOWN?... WHAT IS HIS SON'S NAME?"

Jesus answered these very questions when confronted by another seeker, Nicodemus. When Jesus told Nicodemus that he "MUST BE BORN AGAIN, Nicodemus was puzzled: "HOW CAN THESE THINGS BE?" Jesus challenged Nicodemus with this response:

"TRULY, TRULY, I SAY TO YOU, WE SPEAK OF WHAT WE KNOW, AND BEAR WITNESS TO WHAT WE HAVE SEEN, BUT YOU DO NOT RECEIVE OUR TESTIMONY. IF I HAVE TOLD YOU EARTHLY THINGS AND YOU DO NOT BELIEVE, HOW CAN YOU BELIEVE IF I TELL YOU HEAVENLY THINGS? NO ONE HAS ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN EXCEPT HE WHO DESCENDED FROM HEAVEN, THE SON OF MAN. " (John 3:11-13)

Jesus is the only one who can speak with authority about heavenly things, because He is the only one who has come down from Heaven to reveal the Father. So, when the seeker is desiring to know about the things of God, the ONLY place he will find answers is in Jesus. He alone is the way to the Father. People complain that Christians are too narrow-minded on this issue of salvation. They want to believe that there are several ways. But Jesus did not give us that option. He very clearly made the claim that we are stuck with:

"JESUS SAID TO HIM, "I AM THE WAY, AND THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME." (John 14:6)

Peter affirmed this in his first sermon:

"AND THERE IS SALVATION IN NO ONE ELSE, FOR THERE IS NO OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN GIVEN AMONG MEN BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED." (Acts 4:12)

These are astounding claims! If they were not true, they would be the ravings of a lunatic or a colossal fraud. We don't have the option of just calling Jesus a "good teacher" when He made such claims.

The person who is seeking to know God, must come through His only Son. Period. Jesus came to be "God with us," to show us the Father's heart. And this very familiar section of John's gospel reveals that heart:

"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. FOR GOD DID NOT SEND HIS SON INTO THE WORLD TO CONDEMN THE WORLD, BUT IN ORDER THAT THE WORLD MIGHT BE SAVED THROUGH HIM. WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED, BUT WHOEVER DOES NOT BELIEVE IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HAS NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY SON OF GOD" (John 3:16-18)

We are all way too familiar with John 3:16, but do we know verse 18? God desires to have a relationship with us, and that relationship is through His Son. We just need to believe (trust and cling to) it and receive it. Have you believed yet?
