Wicca is a modern pagan, witchcraft religion

Wicca is a diverse religion with no central authority or figure defining it.

Wicca often involves the ritual practice of magic, though it is not always necessary

Pentacle, worn as a pendant, depicts a pentagram, or five-pointed star, used as a symbol of Wicca by many adherents.

Beliefs in Wicca range from hard polytheism to even monotheism.

Wicca is typically duotheistic, worshipping a god and goddess traditionally viewed as a mother goddess and horned god.

The term Wicca first achieved widespread acceptance when referring to the religion in the 1960s and 70s

Application of the word Wicca has given rise to "a great deal of disagreement and infighting".

The Goddess and the God may be regarded as the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine

The God and Goddess are generally seen as lovers and equals, the Divine Couple who together co-create the cosmos.

Traditionally the God is viewed as a Horned God, associated with nature, wilderness, sexuality, hunting and the life cycle

The Horned God is given various names according to the tradition, and these include Cernunnos, Pan, Atho and Karnayna.

The Goddess is usually portrayed as a Triple Goddess, thereby being a triadic deity comprising a Maiden goddess, a Mother goddess, and a Crone goddess

Some Wiccans, particularly from the 1970s onwards, have viewed the Goddess as the more important of the two deities, who is pre-eminent in that she contains and conceives all. In this respect, the God is viewed as the spark of life and inspiration within her, simultaneously her lover and her child.

Saint Andrew Love Divinations

Saint Andrew Love Divinations
The following love divinations for Saint Andrew's Feast are from pages 42 to 43 of Curiosities of Popular Customs and of Rites, Ceremonies, Observances, and Miscellaneous Antiquities by William S. Walsh (1925). Saint Andrew's feast is celebrated on November 30th of each year.

Luther in his "Table Talk" describes how on the evening of the feast of St. Andrew the young maids

in Germany would strip themselves naked and utter the following prayer: "Deus, Deus meus, o Sancte Andrea, efface ut bonum pium acquiram virum; hodie mihi ostende qualis sit cui me in uxorem ducere debet" ("God, my God, O Saint Andrew, bring it about that I may obtain a good affectionate husband; show me today what manner of man it is that shall lead me to the altar"). Probably there is an allusion to this custom in "The Popish Kingdom" of Naogeorgus, thus translated by Barnaby Googe:

"To Andrew all the lovers and the lusty women come,"

"Believing through his aid and certain ceremonies done"

"(While as to him they presents bring, and conjure all the night)"

"To have good luck, and to obtain their chief and sweet delight."

A pretty German superstition that still survives locally on St. Andrew's Day is the following:

To learn which of the persons present love each other, or will one day be united, a vessel with pure water is set on the table, and there are placed, to float upon the water, little cups of silver foil, inscribed with the names of those whose fortune is to be determined. If a youth's cup advances to a maiden's, or a maiden's to a youth's, it is worth while to note which makes the chief advances; and if they eventually cling together, they will be sweethearts. But little cups must also be set floating marked as priests; and it is only when the youth and the maid coming together get a priest between them that they can look forward with any certainty to marriage.

The Illustrated World Religions A Guide To Our Wisdom Traditions

The Illustrated World Religions A Guide To Our Wisdom Traditions

BOOK: THE ILLUSTRATED WORLD RELIGIONS A GUIDE TO OUR WISDOM TRADITIONS BY HUSTON SMITH

This book has deep respect for the wisdom traditions and Huston Smith has lived this. A practicing Methodist, Smith had discussions with the Vendanta Society, does Hatha Yoga, and prays five times a day like the Muslims. His perspective is not one looking for divisions within a religion, but as an outsider wanting to understand the experiences. For example, in discussing Islam, he talks about the Sufis, but not about the division between Sunnis and Shi'ites.

In lucid and captivating prose, Smith, the dean of world religionists, conducts readers on a whirlwind tour of the beliefs, practices and experiences of the world's religious traditions. Smith explores the major features of these religions by combining his own worlds with passages from the sacred texts of each. In addition, beautifully arresting images of icons, religious Practitioners, sacred texts and sacred art accompany Smith's lyrical writing. The words and images of this book continually remind us that the world's faiths are not stagnant pools of decaying values but dynamic and vibrant waters from which their practitioners daily drink. The book also brings within range of our American hearing the voices of a wide variety of people for whom religion is the central fact of social and cultural life. If one buys only one of the number of recent introductions to World Religions, this should be it.

This book is less about details, facts, and religious holidays, and more about the underlying meaning and unique insight of each religion. E.g., in discussing Hinduism he looks at "What people really want", about a wearing out of the material world. In the chapter of Judaism he discusses meaning in history and justice.

The illustrations complement the text with a symbolic sense of the culture and beliefs. Looking at a sculpture of a very sensual Shiva with consorts helps one realize that the Hindu view of pleasure may be different than your own. The Buddhist and Taoism paintings project a sense of peace. The photographs of the worshippers are very respectful.

Huston has obviously done a great deal of research in the area of World religions. This work is an interesting and informative guide to Understanding why people believe what they believe. In each section he gives a brief discussion of the history of each system of belief (for instance, he talks about Siddhartha's life in the section about Bhuddism). He then continues to discuss the main points, or fundamental beliefs, of each religion. In these discussions, Huston is concise and incredibly informative. Again, it's very obvious that he's done his homework. I found all of these sections very illuminating.

All of the major branches of religion are repressented here (both oriental and occidental thought). That doesn't necesarilly mean that all of the offshoots of any particular religion are repressented --that would probably lead to a much larger, more cumbersome work. With this in mind, Huston's book is an excellent source of information on the various world religions. I would recomend the book to anybody with an interest in religion. It is an excellent tool to help you understand the world, and is well worth the read.

It Beggining To Look A Lot Like Oak Moon

November is know as the Oak Moon. As the year turns darker, the nights grow longer, the moon is brighter. A time of reflection upon oneself, inner-searching, meditation. Transform yourself by learning what are your truths and lies. Perform insight spells.

Other names: Beaver Moon, Dark Moon, Fog Moon, Frosty Moon, Moon Before Yule, Owl Moon, Snow Moon, Storm Moon

Herbs: Sage and Chervil

Astrology: Sagittarius

THE OAK MOON ESBAT

The significance of each of the Esbats draws its influence from the changes in the earth around us. At this point in the wheel of the year, we have seen and accepted the demise in nature. We are taught as we look around the barren and frozen earth, that nothing dies that is not then reborn. We know implicitly that lying just beneath the surface, life waits to spring up around us anew. However, before this can happen the earth must rejuvenate to resurface refreshed and renewed with new purpose and energy. The Mood Goddess at this time is heavy with child - the Sun God, who shall be born at Yule. But before we celebrate the beginning of the return of the light at Yule, or the Winter Solstice (21st December), we celebrate the Oak Moon Esbat (15th December). It is now that we must take our lessons from the earth, accepting we all must rest before a new cycle begins, preparing to grow anew ourselves.

During the Oak Moon, a transition occurs, we move in this moon from death to birth, life renewed at the time of the Winter Solstice. With this in mind, it is a lovely idea to keep a candle burning from the Esbat to the Solstice, acknowledging the return of the light ahead, as the days begin once again to become longer. It is best, if you DECIDE TO KEEP A CANDLE BURNING, to use a contained candle such as a votive, which is designed for extended (and safe) burn times, always observing safety, which is especially important if you have small children or pets. As you light the first candle, recite something akin to:

"Fire of the Sun, illuminate the Earth"

"Bring back life with your rebirth"

"We await your coming, until your rise"

"To re-awake the Earth and nourish our lives"

THE CANDLE IS THEN EXTINGUISHED AT THE WINTER SOLSTICE, WHEN THE LIGHT RETURNS.

At the Esbat of the Oak Moon, there are many RELEVANT RITUALS. To "give candles as gifts" at this time of year is a WONDERFUL THING to do - symbolising our individual flames re-igniting at this powerful time of year.

Some 3,500 identically-dressed couples from 70 countries have tied the knot in a so-called "Moonie" mass wedding in South Korea.

The couples were members of the Unification Church and many were of mixed nationality who had met just days earlier and did not speak the same language.

The wedding was the first since their "messiah" and controversial church founder Sun Myung Moon died five months ago aged 92, of complications from pneumonia.

The latest ceremony carried a special resonance, with Mr Moon's 70-year-old widow Hak Ja Han presiding for the first time without her husband.

It took place in a stadium at the church's global headquarters in Gapyeong, east of the capital Seoul, where Mr Moon's elaborate funeral was held on September 15.

Such mass weddings, including some held in giant sports stadiums, have long been a feature of the church and one that "Moonie" critics have suggested is evidence of cult leanings.

In recent years, matchmaking responsibilities have shifted towards parents.

But 400 of the latest church members to be married had chosen to be paired off a few days before at an "engagement ceremony" presided over by Mr Moon's widow.

"Yeah, I was pretty nervous," admitted Jin Davidson, a 21-year-old student from the United States, whose Australian father and Japanese mother were matched by Mr Moon.

"Then all of a sudden she popped up in front of me, and I said okay," Mr Davidson said of his Japanese bride-to-be, Kotona Shimizu, also 21.

"We struggle a little to communicate right now, as I speak no Japanese at all, and she only speaks a little English, but we see it as an exciting challenge and proof of our faith," he said.

Nineteen-year-old Swedish-Italian Anna Misook, who married to Congolese-Brazilian bridegroom, said: "It feels very great. We get along very well.

"We met four days ago by True Mother's matching. And we are happy to be here and, yeah, looking forward to life together and yeah It's a good life, good, we're happy. We're really happy."

Lisa, from Trinidad and Tobago, first met her bridegroom, Hubert from Poland, on Skype after being put in contact by family and church friends.

Hubert visited her family in December and the couple decided to attend the event in South Korea to receive the blessing of "mother Moon".

"I've been waiting for him all my life," Lisa said. "Language isn't such an issue. We're connected by the church."

Religion Belief Going Dutch

Religion Belief Going Dutch
"GREETINGS, SISTER!"

"I HAVE A SAINT-MATCHING REQUEST."

"I RECENTLY MOVED TO THE DUTCH SPEAKING PART OF BELGIUM BUT I DON'T SPEAK ANY DUTCH! LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES DOESN'T COME EASILY TO ME."

"CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SAINT FOR ME FOR EITHER LANGUAGE LEARNING IN GENERAL AND/OR DUTCH IN PARTICULAR?"

"MANY THANKS FOR ANY HELP!"

Oh, you poor thing! I suppose some people have a penchant for languages. I am not one of them. I speak English and few badly pronounced words of French. Numbers one through ten in Spanish. Miro! Look!

As a result, I am forever baffled by people who are hard on immigrants in the States for not learning English. To me, that is like being aggravated with someone for not knowing how to fix a car. It would be nice to know, but it's just not that easy.

There have already been a couple of very good suggestions in the comments section, but I'm going to go with:

THE TWELVE APOSTLES!

And here we are just after Pentecost! You" do" remember Pentecost? The disciples got together in a room and the Holy Spirit descended on them and voila! (French for "There!"), they could speak and be heard in any language. I'm sure Dutch would have been in there if there was a Dutch language at that time.

Wouldn't that be great? The Holy Spirit descends on you and you can speak Dutch? How 'bout it? Since it sounds like you need as much help as I would, I decided to go with all twelve, although you could conceivably focus on someone like St. Thomas, who maybe was the only apostle to leave the Roman Empire. He went to India (maybe) and would have had to use his new gifts.

The patron saint of Belgium is St. Alena. Such a pretty name! She was the daughter of a chieftain and her night time disappearing act worried her father. He had her followed. She was going to a chapel. He decided she had been bewitched by the Christians and had her dragged home. A fight ensued where her arm was cut or torn off. An angel swooped in and grabbed the arm and flew it over to the chapel, placing it on the altar. Having seen an angel fly in and fly off with the arm, caused Alena's parents to reconsider their attitude toward Christians and they both converted. Being a saint, Alena didn't seem to care about her missing arm. Although, technically it wasn't missing. Everyone knew right where it was. Here she is in Heaven with her arm back. I think.

Monkmartyr Euphrosynus Of Blue Jay Lake Novgorod

Monkmartyr Euphrosynus Of Blue Jay Lake Novgorod
Commemorated on March 20Saint Euphrosynus of Blue Jay Lake, in the world Ephraim, was born in Karelia near Lake Ladoga in the second half of the sixteenth century. In his youth he lived near the Valaamo monastery, and later he moved to Novgorod the Great. After he spent some time there, the saint then withdrew to one of the Novgorod outskirts, the Bezhetsk "pentary" [one fifth of the "Pyatiny Novgorodskiya," comprising five outlying districts of Novgorod the Great].He became helper at church services in the village of Doloska, twenty versts from the city of Ustiuzhna of Zhelezopolska. He was tonsured at the Tikhvin Dormition monastery. In 1600 he began his wilderness life in the wild marshlands on the shore of Blue Lake. Here the saint set up a cross and dug a cave. The saint lived here for two years, eating only wild vegetation.Unexpectedly, people from neighboring villages found him, and they began coming to him for guidance, and several remained to live with him. In 1612, when Polish military detachments were laying waste to Russia, many people were saved by hiding at his wilderness monastery.St Euphrosynus predicted that the Poles would come into this wilderness, and he advised everyone to flee. Many did not believe him. "Why then don't you leave this place yourself?" they asked. The Elder replied, "I have come here to die for Christ." Those who obeyed the saint and left the monastery were spared, but all those who stayed died a horrible death.St Jonah had also been one of the inhabitants of the monastery. Terrified by the prediction of St Euphrosynus, he wanted to flee with the others. But St Euphrosynus held him back, inspiring the monk with zeal for the house of God and a readiness to remain in the monastery until his death."Brother Jonah," said St Euphrosynus, "why this cowardly fear in your soul? When the battle begins, then courage must be shown. We vowed to live and die in the wilderness. We must be faithful to our word, given before the Lord. In such a case, death results in peace. It is another matter for the laity. They are not bound by their word, and they must spare themselves for the sake of their children."After this St Euphrosynus dressed himself in the schema, and spent the whole night in prayer. On the following day, March 20, Polish forces fell upon the monastery. Attired as a schemamonk, the saint emerged from his cell and stood with upraised cross. The enemy said to him, "Old man, give us the monastery's valuables.""All my possessions, and those of this monastery, are in the church of the All-Pure Mother of God," he replied. He was referring to spiritual treasures which cannot be stolen. Not understanding this, the thugs rushed to the church, and one of them drew a sword and struck St Euphrosynus on the neck. His neck was cut half way through, and the holy Elder fell to the ground dead. When the Poles returned, angered that they had found nothing in the church, one of them struck the saint's head with an axe. St Jonah also perished in the attack.A certain pious Christian, Ioann Suma, had also stayed at the monastery with the monks. When the Poles burst onto the scene, he was in the saint's cell. Despite the grievous wounds he received from these ruffians, Ioann remained alive, but unconscious. After the departure of the Poles, he regained his senses and told his son Emilian what had transpired. The nearby inhabitants learned from them about the destruction of the monastery and the martyric death of St Euphrosynus. The saint's body was reverently buried on March 28. On this same day they also buried St Jonah and all the others who had perished under the sword.Thirty-four years after the death of the saint, a new church was built by a certain Moses, and dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity. With the blessing of Metropolitan Macarius of Novgorod, the incorrupt relics of St Euphrosynus were transferred to a new reliquary beneath the belfry on March 25, 1655.St Euphrosynus was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church on June 29, 1912.SOURCE:SAINT OR FEAST POSTED THIS DATE 2008:

Blogospheric Beatitudes

Blogospheric Beatitudes
Oftentimes, due to the zeal to defend our faith, we sadly lapse into *snarkiness*, sarcasm, condescension and downright vitriol. If our blogged words could kill, there would be many casualties of the religious wars of blogdom. The reality is, at some level there are casualties. Our Church believes there are very real and temporal consequences to our wrong actions and behaviors including grieving the Holy Spirit. The words we type on-line are not excluded from Christ's promise that they will be shouted from the housetops. Unfortunately, my own comments and posts are not entirely free of this. I am not proud to admit this nor do I look forward to the "This Was Your Life" tract of my darker moments, since we are definitely held accountable for the things we have done in this life, whether good or bad. So when I see interactions on the net that are examples of Christ's command to love your neighbor as yourself, I want to post about it!

My frequent commenter, Theo,

had been conversing on a blog that does not share his theological perspective. Check out the beatitudes shown here. Theo always ends his comments with:

"Theo:"

"Humbly, I remain your brother in Christ,"

Respondent:

As long as you cultivate a belief that you are justified by the merits of Christ, your congruent merit, and the congruent merit of others, you believe a false gospel, Theo, and you are no brother.

Theo :

Dear brother
,

You wrote: "you believe a false gospel, Theo, and you are no brother."

I fully understand how your interpretation of Scripture and the theology you hold sacred forces you into this view. As I previously wrote in a different thread on this blogsite,

"...please understand that in spite of your theology, I recognize your Christianity, and as such, I deem you my brother... I know that you cannot call me 'brother.' Please understand that *my* best understanding of the Gospel mandates that I recognize you as 'brother,' nevertheless. You can disavow our fraternity in Christ. I cannot.

"Regardless, I'm confident that God's will shall be done. In the end, all is to God's Glory."

Humbly I remain your servant and brother in Christ,

--Theo God bless Theo, he's a better man than I!

Decorate Decoration

Decorate Decoration

SPIRITUAL MEANING:

Decoration is a way of honouring the divine and there is much symbolism attached to this from the altar cloths in Christian and Wiccan religions to food for the spirits in Thai Buddhist spirit houses. Dreams often access such spiritual knowledge.

PSYCHOLOGICAL / EMOTIONAL PERSPECTIVE:

When we dream of decorating a room or dwelling place we are aware that changes need to be made in our environment, perhaps to utilize a particular vibration.

EVERYDAY MATERIAL ASPECTS:

Colour may be important in the way we decorate our dream rooms, as may be the articles we choose to have in our environment. When such an article is highlighted it suggests ways of enhancing our day-to-day lives by what it represents.

GENDER / SPECIFIC MEANINGS:

Men's and women's dreams may be very different in terms of the way they adorn their rooms. Traditionally it was thought that women were more drawn to frills and men to sleeker lines. If the decoration seems out of character we probably need to develop some aspect of creativity.

The Year Christ Died And Was Resurrected

The Year Christ Died And Was Resurrected
No one should judge another in respects to a Holy Day or a Sabbath

day one keeps.....So many keep Easter today and are not concerned about knowing

the truth of when he died and was resurrected. It bothers me that people that keep Easter, for the most part ignore the fact that Easter is not in the Bible. The word

in the King James, in Acts for Easter....is a miss translation of the word Passover.

Yes, as Christians we celebrate Christ's Resurrection. Why not preach the truth about it in our churches, if we profess to believe the literal word of God and stop keeping a false thing....Easter. Just know when Christ was resurrected and teach the truth about it, instead of a lie!

As for myself, if a church can't get something strait that even the encyclopedia

gets right, but not today's church Traditions of men, then I would question a lot of other traditions of men they are preaching as the gospel truth......

Prophecy: The Messiah Will Appear in Jerusalem in A.D. 31

Posted by brittgillette on February 24th, 2007

Jesus ChristOne of the most amazing prophecies in the Old Testament is found in the Book of Daniel. The angel Gabriel appears to Daniel and reveals to him the exact number of days that will pass between the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem and the time the Messiah will appear in Jerusalem and be killed, "appearing to have accomplished nothing." Only one historical person's life fulfills this prophecy of the Messiah: Jesus of Nazareth.

This is what Gabriel tells Daniel:

"A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to put down rebellion, to bring an end to sin, to atone for guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy One. Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times."

"After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the City and the Temple." Daniel 9:24-26 (NLT)

According to the Book of Daniel, 483 years [(7 x 7) + (62 x 7)] will pass between the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Since a biblical year is 360 days, we're actually being told that 173,880 days will pass. So to find out if this prophecy was fulfilled, we only need to count forward 173,880 days from the time of the command and see if anyone entered Jerusalem and was killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing. If such a person exists, the Word of God confirms that person is the Messiah.

So when was the command given? The Book of Nehemiah tells us.

"In the month of Nissan, during the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes reign, I was serving the king his wine. I had never appeared sad in his presence before this time. So the king asked me, 'Why are you so sad? You aren't sick, are you? You look like a man with deep troubles.'"

"Then I was badly frightened, but I replied, 'Long live the king! Why shouldn't I be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been burned down.' The king asked, 'Well, how can I help you?' With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, 'If it please Your Majesty and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.'"

"The king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked, 'How long will you be gone? When will you return?' So the king agreed, and I set a date for my departure."

"I also said to the king, 'If it please Your Majesty, give me letters to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, instructing them to let me travel safely through their territories on my way to Judah. And please send a letter to Asaph, the manager of the king's forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.' And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me." Nehemiah 2:1-8 (NLT)

According to the Book of Nehemiah, the command to rebuild Jerusalem was given in the 20th year of the reign of Artaxerxes (446 B.C.) during the month of Nisan (March/April).

Using this Calendar Conversion Tool, we can calculate the time frame in which the prophecy must be fulfilled. Counting 173,880 days into the future from Nissan 1 to Nissan 30 in the year 446 B.C. (the year 3315 in the Jewish Calendar), we learn that the prophecy must be fulfilled between the dates of 13 April A.D. 31 and 12 May A.D. 31:

Gregorian Calendar: 20 March 446 B.C.

Jewish Calendar: 1 Nisan 3315

+173,880 days (360 days x 483 years)

Gregorian Calendar: 13 April A.D. 31

Jewish Calendar: 4 Iyyar 3791

and

Gregorian Calendar: 18 April 446 B.C.

Jewish Calendar: 30 Nisan 3315

+173,880 days (360 days x 483 years)

Gregorian Calendar: 12 May A.D. 31

Jewish Calendar: 4 Sivan 3791

Did anyone appear in Jerusalem between 13 April A.D. 31 and 12 May A.D. 31 who fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah and was killed, "appearing to accomplish nothing"?

Yes. Jesus of Nazareth.

During the Passover festivities in Jerusalem in the year A.D. 31, Jesus was killed in such a way. According to David Reagan's commentary on the subject, the New Testament provides evidence that two Sabbaths occurred, one on Thursday and one on Saturday, during the week of Jesus of Nazareth's crucifixion. Given other historical records and evidence, we can be certain that the crucifixion of Jesus occurred on the 24th of April A.D. 31, a date that falls between the predetermined timeframe of 13 April to 12 May for the Messiah's appearance.

Thus, we can be certain that Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled the requirements of this messianic prophecy. He also fulfilled all the other messianic Old Testament prophecies. No other historical individual appeared during April/May of A.D. 31 who could fulfill this prophecy. Furthermore, Daniel 9:26 predicted, "after this period of sixty-two sets of seven... a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the City and the Temple."

Did this happen?

Yes.

In A.D. 70, thirty-nine years after Jesus was killed, a ruler named Titus (who later became Emperor of Rome), led the Roman legions into Jerusalem where they destroyed the City and the Temple. This completed the messianic prophecy of Daniel 9:24-26, and made it impossible for anyone to appear after the year A.D. 70 and make a legitimate claim to fulfillment of the messianic prophecies.

brittgillette.com

A Passover on Wednesday is the only day of the week that works with all Biblical accounts of the crucifixion. Yahshua was in the grave "three days and three nights" Matthew 12:40. From Wednesday just before sunset to Saturday just before sunset is three days and three nights. The fact that the day following Yahshua's crucifixion was a Sabbath (Mark 15:42, Luke 23:52-54, and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 21:

1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,

2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.

4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,

7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

Matthew 26:

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. (Tuesday the preparation day)Lev.23:4-

3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.

5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.( How religious ?)

Matthew 26:

31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

Matthew 27:

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Mark 15:

33 And when the sixth hour(noon) was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34 And at the ninth hour(3PM) Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. (Just after 3PM)

John 19:

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. ( 1st day of unleavened bread) Leviticus 23:5-7

Matthew 27

57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. ( He would have been dumped in Gehenna ) The city dump,

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. (No time left to buy or prepare spices.)

Luke 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

( The High day,Thursday)

Mark 16:

1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.(This had to be Friday, the only time they could get the spices, and do this work, preparing them.)

Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment

Matthew 28:

1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

John 15:

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Good Wednesday

Today is Good Wednesday.

Christian tradition places the crucifixion of Christ on Friday. But, in actually it happened on Wednesday.

A Friday crucifixion does not mathematically fulfill the Jonah prophecy of the Messiah:

He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. -Matthew 12:39-41

If He had died on Friday and rose on Sunday, he would have been in the grave for only 2 nights which falls short of the 3 day, 3 night prophecy.

Result: Jesus is not the Messiah

So, where is the mistake?

The mistake is all about the use in the text of the word Sabbath.

We are told that the soldiers were breaking the legs of the men on the crosses so that they would be pulled down and buried before the Sabbath in order to prevent their bodies from remaining on the crosses over the sabbath and therefore stinking the place up.

Jesus of course, was the exception, fulfilling the prophecy that no bone should be broken, making Him a perfect spotless Passover lamb.

During the week in which Jesus was crucified, there were two Sabbaths, the High Sabbath which fell on Thursday and the normal Sabbath which began at sundown on Friday.

One of the most fitting and powerful prophecies about Jesus are in regards to the passover prophecy which equates him with the Passover lamb. So fittingly, He died on Passover which was Wednesday, just before the High sabbath.

Now, if he died on Wednesday and rose on Sunday, he was in the grave for 4 nights not 3 nights.

Result: Not the messiah.

But, if He died on Wednesday and rose on Saturday, you get 3 days and 3 nights in the grave.

Result: Jesus is the Messiah!

New Moon Energies In Aquarius

The Trouble With Atheists

The Trouble With Atheists
1) We don't provide a united front. We are a diversified bunch of people. Some of us support different atheist organizations, subscribe to different atheist magazines, while others don't support or subscribe to any at all. 2) We have no leaders. While there are certainly some standouts in the atheist community there are always disagreements on who we regard as our intellectual heroes. 3) We cannot agree on anything else but religion. We can't even agree on what to call ourselves. We disagree on such things as the basis for morality (or lack ther), on politics, and on whether or not Jesus existed (and if so, what we are to think of him). 4) We have no agreed upon causes. Some focus on the separation of church and state, others on politics, others on science, and still others on specific kinds of religion and/or paranormal claims. 5) We cannot agree about tactics. There are the friendly atheists, spiritual atheists, evangelical atheists, and others who merely want to educate, not necessarily persuade, believers. We are human beings of every age, shape, gender, skin color, health, wealth, education and social social status. We simply do not believe. We think for ourselves based on solid evidence and good reasons. We cannot be herded like believing sheep. Nor can we be fleeced. BUT THIS IS OUR STRENGTH. We are everywhere. We are the wave of the future. There is no turning back the hands of time. We cannot be ignored any more.

Catholic Spirituality

Catholic Spirituality
There is a danger and flipside to spiritual quest. Some men and women who go into so called spiritual study, practices and thoughts often create around us a pseudo cocoon. We derive pseudo spiritual satisfaction with our selfish study, self centered personal enlightenment seeking.Intellectualization is good but only to a certain degree. Imbalance in any thing including spiritual and religious study is unwanted. One of the major problems of spiritual attachment is that it is very often amount to mere talk and personal self pride. Without real work in this world for real people all quest for religious and spiritual knowledge is fueling the ego with pride.Unless through action we start manifesting goodness, kindness, compassion and love to other human being we fail our purpose in this world. As God manifest his will through creating this creation; human being as image of God as Khaifatullah ["vicegerent of Allah"] must learn to manifest the essential quality in service, in action.Religious and spiritual learning is nothing but our preparation for the service to humanity. From Krishna to Buddha, Jesus to Mohammad you will find not a single human being whom humanity adore... a great soul, who didn't serve the humanity, who didn't come out to heal the world. If so many spiritual text, so many religious books and verses doesn't inspire us to go out and give our services, our wealth, our time for the less fortunate, I am sorry to say our reading, our study reach nowhere. God doesn't need our praise, but His praise was supposed to help us realize our praise worthy ability to serve others ">Tags: aleister crowley satanist list of gods and goddesses names the book of shadows spells images of hindu gods and goddesses list of all the greek gods and goddesses enochian tablet the grimoire

RAQUIA

Beloved brothers and sisters, there is a tremendous transition going on as we are all very aware of it right now.

My desire is to express my sincerest and deepest gratitude for all the hard work accomplished so far.

Your love and light have been instrumental in transforming a planet swamped in darkness.

I have much love for all, as I have faced, as you have, my very own trials and tribulations during this incarnation.

Always remember...

... we are all one.

This is very important going forward as we must leave behind our old "PROGRAMMING" based on separation and fear.

Deep down we are all the same, beautiful sparks of the creator.

Magnificent light beings perfect as we are.

The days ahead brings the promise of a new day.

The love of our Divine God father and God mother is here to stay forever...not to mention all the love from all the beings of light in other realms.

Let's continue to fill up our hearts with the love of the creator and share that love with the world.

Many blessings to you all and my love goes out to you within the words of this message.

Love is oneness always.

Day 5 O Oriens O Rising Sun

Day 5 O Oriens O Rising Sun
Tonight's O Antiphon is "O Oriens." The Latin word "Oriens" literally means "Dawn, Rising Sun," or "East." The "O Oriens" prophesy comes from Isaiah 9:1-7,

Holman Hunt,

"Christ the Light of the World" (1854)

But there will be no gloom for her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zeb'ulun and the land of Naph'tali, BUT IN THE LATTER TIME HE WILL MAKE GLORIOUS THE WAY OF THE SEA, THE LAND BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE NATIONS.THE PEOPLE WHO WALKED IN DARKNESS HAVE SEEN A GREAT LIGHT; THOSE WHO DWELT IN A LAND OF DEEP DARKNESS, ON THEM HAS LIGHT SHINED.

Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as on the day of Mid'ian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. FOR TO US A CHILD IS BORN, TO US A SON IS GIVEN; AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE UPON HIS SHOULDER, AND HIS NAME WILL BE CALLED "WONDERFUL COUNSELOR, MIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE." Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.So the coming Messiah will arrive as a Child, will be associated with Galilee, and His Advent will be like the dawn breaking forth. And this, of course, is exactly how the New Testament describes Christ. Zechariah prophesies that his son, John the Baptist, will be a forerunner for the Messiah, proclaiming (Luke 1:76-79),

"AND YOU, CHILD, WILL BE CALLED THE PROPHET OF THE MOST HIGH; FOR YOU WILL GO BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS, TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF SALVATION TO HIS PEOPLE IN THE FORGIVENESS OF THEIR SINS, THROUGH THE TENDER MERCY OF OUR GOD, WHEN THE DAY SHALL DAWN UPON US FROM ON HIGH TO GIVE LIGHT TO THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH, TO GUIDE OUR FEET INTO THE WAY OF PEACE."And St. John's Gospel is quite clear on this identification of Christ (John 1:5-9):

THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. But the clearest identification with Isaiah 9 is when "Matthew explicitly tells" us that Christ fulfills this prophesy (Mt. 4:12-16):Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Caper'na-um by the sea, in the territory of Zeb'ulun and Naph'tali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zeb'ulun and the land of Naph'tali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles -- the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."By the way, this depiction of Christ as Oriens is also why Catholic churches historically face east: "ad orientum". It's from building churches to face towards the East, towards the Oriens, that we get the word "orientation."

The traditional Latin Antiphon is:

O ORIENS, splendor lucis aeternae,

et sol justitiae:

veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris,

" et umbra mortis."Which means, in English:O DAYSPRING, Brightness of the everlasting light,

Son of justice,

Come to give light to them that sit in darkness,

and in the shadow of death! It corresponds to the sixth verse from "O Come, O Come Emmanuel":O Come, Thou Dayspring from on high,

and cheer us by thy drawing nigh;

disperse the gloomy clouds of night

and death's dark shadow put to flight. And the English version used in the Antiphon today:O RADIANT DAWN, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:

Come, shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death. And finally, here are the Dominican student brothers at Blackfriars in Oxford singing the Latin plainchant:

Fisking A Cardinal

Fisking A Cardinal
Perhaps Plus Zuhlsdorf can enter this commerce for me: how faraway time in Purgatory can I have over for fisking some parts of the blog post written by Cardinal O'Malley in this area His Eminence's impart in the Kennedy Interment Mass?

As relaxed, my annotations movement be in red. One time a few opening paragraphs in which Cardinal O'Malley mentions his ordination saint's day, the church, the music, and the at the rear Senator Kennedy's attempt of praying at this fixed church stylish his daughter's hike with swelling, we get to the median of things:

In light of these themes, I wish to quarters our Catholic perpetual who presume voiced every fix and plummet ["on the whole, nevertheless, the Cardinal appears to quarters the offend"] at my having presided at the Senator's entombment Collection.

Emaciated to say, the Senator's wake up and Catholic entombment were disputable seeing that of the fact that he did not publically fix Catholic teaching and advocacy on behalf of the unborn. [Not bad, now, all due substance to His Protrusion, but regard on a minute! The Senator did not minimally furnish to fix Church teaching on abortion, publicly or instead. The Senator openly, publicly dissented from that teaching, and cast-off the power of his room to help sprint laws which enabled the practice of abortion in too many ways to count! Positive give is a compare amid open, natives fix for abortion and minimally ill-health to fix Church teaching, is give not?]

Given the perplexing effect of Catholic convivial teaching on so many of the programs and policies espoused by Senator Kennedy ["I like that's very changeable, in that Senator Kennedy didn't appearance to cooperation faraway about Catholic teaching, convivial or instead, at all in his natives work"] and the millions who benefitted from them, give is a distressing practice of lost instance [over, lost opportunity? Do the millions of unborn whose murders were restore or in a roundabout way facilitated by legislation Senator Kennedy supported and selected for stylish his lingering Senate time be significant for nothing? It's as if fill with unborn losses usefully don't be significant at all, and that's exactly disturbing] in his lack of fix for ["fix for the massacre of"] the unborn. To me and many Catholics it was a huge plummet seeing that, had he positioned the matter of life at the focus of the Extroverted Gospel anywhere it belongs, he might presume multiplied the immensely ready to lend a hand work he sound. [No evade there--but over, might we not say one word about the fact that the Senator did not minimally furnish to place the matter of life at the focus of the Extroverted Gospel but noticeably took a leading serve that was openly inimical to the unborn?]

The thousands of competition who with stripes the broadcasting as the at the rear Senator's pageant travelled from Shawl Cod to Boston and the throngs that packed full the Kennedy Archive for two days stylish the devious in reduction, I take on, were give to pay tribute to these many events moderately than as an agreement of the Senator's ballot vote stock on abortion. [Featuring in is our first--and only--mention that the snare with the Senator went barely past a water disappointment to fix Catholic teaching and advocacy on behalf of the unborn.]

The crowds to boot were give to pay tribute to the Kennedy farmhouse as a whole. On the state-run biased scrutiny, if Barack Obama indigent the casement detention of the paperwork for African Americans, Jack Kennedy indigent it for American Catholics. ["..."] [Impart trajectory a few paragraphs about the Kennedys. I find this bit troubling; it's around as nevertheless the pro-abortion stances of most of the Kennedy farmhouse are to be disregarded for two reasons: seeing that of Eunice Shriver's pro-life views, and seeing that of the way the Kennedys opened up politics to American Catholics. All due substance to the Cardinal, but has His Protrusion noticed the way the Kennedys opened up politics to American Catholics? Has His Protrusion realized that to get special, most Catholics in superior room constraint turn their backs on the unborn--and that this is restore linked to the Kennedys and their vouch that mammal Catholic wouldn't really mean no matter what in vocabulary of the biased landscape? Few pro-life Catholics can get everywhere in state-run politics today--the ones who sold their souls to the abortion matter presume struck a devil's switch that American Catholics eternally can't break.]

Impart are fill with who objected, in some hand baggage discordantly, to the Church's distribution a Catholic entombment for the Senator. In the strongest vocabulary I row with that put right. [I to boot like Senator Kennedy requirement presume had a Catholic Interment. It requirement presume been a settle down, calm, penitential affair--as, clearly, all funerals of adults requirement be. It requirement not presume been a quasi-canonization, monster in its overlooking of the Senator's fix for abortion.] At the Senator's interment on Saturday evening, with his family's sanction, we theoretical of information of his deceased variety send a message to with Pope Benedict XVI. It was very moving to entertain the Senator acknowledging his ill-health to always be a perpetual Catholic, and his rub on for prayers as he faced the end of his life. The Holy Father's approximately of merit for the Senator's quality of prayer for the Church, his approval of the Senator and his farmhouse to the intrusion of the Sacred Mother, and his imparting the Apostolic Style, josh of His Devoutness serve as the Priest of Christ, the Trivial Line up who plants none of the throng tabled.

As Archbishop of Boston, I calculated it agreeable to be thinking about the Church at this liturgy out of substance ["really? Respect--not mercy? Are we to be respecters of fill with, then?"] for the Senator, his farmhouse, fill with who attended the Collection and all fill with who were praying for the Senator and his farmhouse at this multiplex time. We are competition of hope and we take on in a passionate and ductile God from whom we search leniency. ["..."] [Impart trajectory, fashionable, two paragraphs discussing the Cardinal's resoluteness to pro-life goings-on.]

At get older, even in the Church, zeal can lead competition to matter metallic judgments and impute the last motives to one unorthodox [This bothers me significantly. Anything viable good motives might give be for a man to fix abortion his whole life? Anything viable good motives might give be for his farmhouse to use the Interment Collection as their own variety sports car for politics, for celebration of the deceased's life, and for other inappropriate actions?]. These attitudes and practices do permanent letdown to the communion of the Church. If any rearrangement is motivated by punishment, audacity or vindictiveness, it movement be ill-fated to marginalization and disappointment. [Abolitionists were angry; they judged slaveholders as awful of a crime against God. Were they wrong? Did they fail? Do we owe less of clearly audacity and punishment, nevertheless surrounded in love, on the way to fill with who aid in the atrocity of aristocratic than fifty million American children when Roe v. Wade?] Jesus' words to us were that we constraint love one unorthodox as He loves us. Jesus loves us having the status of we are eternally in sin. He loves each of us initial, and He loves us to the end. [Yes. But He is to boot the basically Adjudicate Whom we adjoin at the little of our deaths. And woe to every prelate who has failed to scan fill with Catholics under his charge who publicly, hungrily, doggedly work for abortion having the status of claiming to be Catholics in good standing. I would not wish for to give birth to such a one's shameful what you have to do on the Day of Sample.] Our know-how to advance blue-collar hearts and help them to hook the aplomb of each and every life, from the initial little of conception to the grip little of natural death, is restore alike to our know-how to blow love and unity in the Church, for our proclamation of the Philosophical statement is held up with we are branched and proceedings with each other. [Resolute, if we are branched and proceedings expert trifles. Is the shut down of absolute unborn humans a trifle? Is it water politics, no matter which that matters no aristocratic to our eternal salvation than the accord of a railway bridge protrude, or a tax increase? And isn't it already a solid and poor shame that Catholics are proceedings expert abortion at all? Shouldn't all Catholics in America be pro-life? Whose fault is it if they aren't?]

Proceed Obama and three previously presidents attended Senator Kennedy's entombment. ["Not even a aside of that eulogy, I see."] I had the instance to speak briefly with Proceed Obama, to go up in price him to the Basilica and to taste with him that the bishops of the Catholic Church are unresolved to fix a lack for macro health cooperation, but we movement not fix a lack that movement boast a feature for abortion or might open the way to abortions in the far-off. The Proceed was righteous in the immediate time we josh, he listened intently to what I was saying. [But why requirement he, in the end, care? Catholics in America presume unacceptable time and time over that we movement smudge expert and pretend dead with it comes to the abortion matter, and this entombment was unorthodox instance to show exactingly that.]

Democrats and Republicans sat mark with streaks by mark with streaks in the Basilica of Our Lord of Eternal Funds, praying for Senator Kennedy and his farmhouse. It is my dictate aspiration that all competition who want to awaken the rearrangement of life movement pray and work together to advance hearts, to bring about an amplified substance for life, and to advance laws so as to make America a moral place for all, in the company of the unborn. [If we can't even advance Catholic hearts on contraception, let helpless on abortion, we presume no aspiration of changing the hearts of Americans with it comes to giving up their abortion attempt, which is so very vital to the traditions of sex inadequate consequences--an traditions the at the rear Senator Kennedy worked accusatory to enshrine and protect. The Cardinal's aspiration is piously spoken, but the Cardinal's deeds, affection the deeds of so many superior clergy in the American Catholic Church, presume gone faraway to be required.]

UPDATE: Plus Z. has done his own, style, masterful fisk of the Cardinal's blog post fashionable.

List Of Religious Texts Of The World

List Of Religious Texts Of The World
THE RUMOR MILL NEWS READING ROOM LIST OF RELIGIOUS TEXTS OF THE WORLDPosted By: Nemesis [Send E-Mail]

Date: Sunday, 4-Jan-2015 18:46:08

(Having read them all recently I decided to sit for a few minutes and ponder what I have learned in order to choose a theology (religion) that I believe is true).

*LIST OF THE TEXTS IS BELOW INTRODUCTION (THIS IS FROM WIKIPEDIA).

Religious texts, also known as scripture, scriptures, holy writ, or holy books, are the texts which various religious traditions consider to be sacred, or central to their religious tradition. Many religions and spiritual movements believe that their sacred texts are divinely or supernaturally revealed or inspired.

History of religious texts

The oldest known religious texts are Pyramid texts of Ancient Egypt that date to 2400-2300 BCE. The earliest form of the Phoenician alphabet found to date is the inscription on the sarcophagus of King Ahiram of Byblos. ( The Sumerian Temple Hymns ). The Epic of Gilgamesh from Sumer, with origins as early as 2150-2000 BCE,:41-42 is also one of the earliest literary works that includes various mythological figures.:41-42 The Rigveda of Hinduism is proposed to have been composed between 1700-1100 BCE making it possibly the world's oldest religious text still in use. The oldest portions of the Zoroastrian Avesta are believed to have been transmitted orally for centuries before they found written form, and although widely differing dates for Gathic Avestan have been proposed, scholarly consensus floats at around 1000 - 600 BCE.

The majority of scholars agree that the Torah's composition took place over centuries. From the late 19th century there was a general consensus around the documentary hypothesis, which suggests that the five books were created c.450 BCE by combining four originally independent sources, known as the Jahwist, or J (about 900 BCE), the Elohist, or E (about 800 BCE), the Deuteronomist, or D, (about 600 BCE), and the Priestly source, or P (about 500 BC).

The first scripture printed for wide distribution to the masses was The Diamond Sutra, a Buddhist scripture, and is the earliest recorded example of a dated printed text, bearing the Chinese calendar date for 11 May 868 CE.

Views

Attitudes to sacred texts differ. Some religions make written texts widely and freely available, while others hold that sacred secrets must remain hidden from all but the loyal and the initiate. Most religions promulgate policies defining the limits of the sacred texts and controlling or forbidding changes and additions. Some religions view their sacred texts as the "Word of God", often contending that the texts are inspired by God and as such not open to alteration. Translations of texts may receive official blessing, but an original sacred language often has de facto, absolute or exclusive paramountcy. Some religions make texts available free or in subsidized form; others require payment and the strict observance of copyright.

References to scriptures profit from standardisation: the Guru Granth Sahib (of Sikhism) always appears with standardised page numbering while many other religions (including the Abrahamic religions and their offshoots) favour chapter and verse pointers.

Other terms

Terms like "Holy Writ", "Holy Scripture" or "Sacred Scripture" are often used by adherents to describe the canonical works of their religion to denote the text's importance, its status as divine revelation, or, as in the case of many Christian groups, its complete inerrancy. Christianity is not alone in using this terminology to revere its sacred book; Islam holds the Qur'an in similar esteem, as does Hinduism the Vedas and Bhagavad Gita and Buddhism the sutras.

Traditional Christendom

The Bible (the Old Testament and New Testament)

For Protestantism, this is the 66-book canon - the Jewish Tanakh of 24 books divided differently (into 39 books) and the universal 27-book New Testament.

For Catholicism, this includes seven deuterocanonical books in the Old Testament for a total of 73 books, called the Canon of Trent (in versions of the Latin Vulgate, 3 Esdras and 4 Esdras are included in an appendix, but considered non-canonical).

For the Eastern Orthodox Church, this includes the anagignoskomena, which consist of the Catholic deuterocanon, plus 3 Maccabees, Psalm 151, the Prayer of Manasseh, and 3 Esdras. 4 Maccabees is considered to be canonical by the Georgian Orthodox Church.[10]

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (and its offspring, the Eritrean Orthodox Church) adds various additional books depending on the specific enumeration of the canon (see Ethiopian Biblical canon), but always includes 4 Esdras, the Book of Jubilees, 1 Enoch, 4 Baruch, and 1, 2, and 3 Meqabyan (no relation to the Books of Maccabees).

Some Syriac churches accept the Letter of Baruch as scripture.
