Our Yule Ritual

Happy Winter!

The night of our winter solstice celebration, we got our first major snow of the year. How appropriate! Artemis, our Lhasa Apso, absolutely adores snow. When I noticed it was starting to melt away this evening, I just had to let him out so he could enjoy the last of it. Hopefully there will be more snow in our future!

Every sabbat, my circle does a group ritual. For the winter solstice, I dressed the circle up with garland and gold glitter snowflakes around the stones I typically use to define the borders. The altar in the center had two pine cone candles and one snowflake candle similar to the glitter snowflakes above. There's a wooden pole in the center of the circle which I wrapped in lights. Even each corner had its own decoration.

As you can see above, each corner has its own calling and release. I let people in the circle choose their corners. If anyone is left over, they spread the salt while I read the opening segment. Once the corners are called, we turn to the center, stating:

"We are a circle within a circle, with no beginning and never ending."

Then the ritual begins. Typically, I start with a welcoming and an individual calling of energies, spirits, ancestors and/or deities. Because many in the circle have differing beliefs, it is my goal to include everyone in each ritual by letting them call the appropriate energies for their workings.

For Yule, we focused on the lengthy darkness and the coming of the light. I asked each person to recall a dark moment in their life and state what kept them going - their spark of light. We wrote upon the Yule log one goal, then broke that goal down into simple steps. We took one step that someone might be able to help us with, wrote that on a sheet of paper and put it into the basket. One by one, each person drew a slip of paper and thus became someone's Spark of Light for the upcoming year. Furthermore, we flipped those papers over and wrote down something we could do to be the Spark of Light in our community. Some wanted to donate blood or clothes. Quite a few of us decided we could carpool together and volunteer at a soup kitchen. A couple of us also wanted to volunteer at a pet shelter.

We ended it with a closing poem:

"We honor the Wheel, for it is our teacher."

"It shows us that we must all go through the longest night."

"It tells us not to be afraid of what we cannot see,"

"That the challenges are a part of the endless cycle of life."

"The stillness of the night can be introspective."

"It reminds us to accept ourselves, all of ourselves,"

"And that we must be accepting of others as well."

"And so we honor the dark on the longest of nights."

"But even in the dark, there is light,And we are never alone."

"To survive, endure and prosper, we must share, depend and help."

"Just as the moon guides us on our path and the stars twinkle above,"

"So too do we have friends and family that will help us on our journey."

"And even we know that the night cannot last forever."

"Tomorrow the sun will return,"

"Just as it always does."

"We must have hope."

"And so we honor the light in the morning."

"The Wheel of the Year turns once more,"

"Ever changing, and yet always constant,"

"The greatest teacher we will ever know."

"O Winter, cast your eyes upon us this night as the solstice approaches."

"Grant us love, wisdom, strength, and peace,"

"And blessings upon the Earth."

At the end of the ritual, after we closed the circle, we passed through the wreath. This is a tradition that symbolizes moving from the darkness to light. When the ritual is over, all the candles are snuffed and the circle area is dark. With the tree still lit, upstairs is bright. Hanging the garland in the shape of a wreath, each person stepped through, passing from the darkness of the basement to the light of the world above - much as we did when we watched the sun rise in the morning.

The next sabbat, Imbolc, will be special this year as it will be the first ritual that I will not write nor lead for the group. Since I wrote and led Samhain, I passed the other fire festivals on to other members of the group. Because we are not a coven and I am not a high priestess, I wanted everyone to have equal chances and equal say in each of the major rituals.

earth cuts the slugs and causes them to dehydrate. Reapply after each rain.

Deter snails and slugs by sprinkling cayenne pepper along their paths.

Place ceramic flowerpots upside-down to attract and trap snails and slugs

in the shade. Overturn them and remove the snails daily until they are gone.

To Remove Red Wine Stains:

It's easier to get rid of stains when they are fresh. First, blot, then dilute with warm water and blot again. Then:

Method 1: Pour on a bit of milk, white wine, or club soda. Blot and wash with warm water and liquid detergent.

Method 2: Mix equal parts liquid detergent and fresh hydrogen peroxide (it loses its effectiveness if it's old) and apply to stain. Blot and reapply if necessary, then use warm water to rinse. Allow to dry.

To Remove Fruit Juice and Berry Stains:

Blot and dilute the stain, then apply straight white vinegar. Rinse with warm water.

To Remove Chewing Gum:

Remove as much of it as you can (some people swear by using a plastic bag to pick up the gum: evidently, the gum will adhere to the plastic). Then apply ice cubes to the gum still remaining on the carpet to freeze it: the gum becomes easy to pick out of the rug fibers.

To Remove Grease Stains:

First, blot away as much of the grease as you can. Then apply straight isopropyl alcohol to the stain. Blot, then wash with warm water and liquid detergent. If that doesn't get it all, apply a few drops of fresh hydrogen peroxide and blot, then wash again with warm water and detergent.

Suit Nasa Specialist Axed Over Intelligent Design

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A computer specialist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is going to court over allegations that he was wrongfully terminated because of his belief in intelligent design.

Openings statements in the lawsuit by David Coppedge were expected Monday afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Coppedge, who worked as a team lead on the Cassini mission exploring Saturn and its many moons, claims he was discriminated against because he engaged his co-workers in conversations about intelligent design and handed out DVDs on the idea while at work.

Intelligent design is the belief that a higher power must have had a hand in creation because life is too complex to have developed through evolution alone.

Coppedge lost his team lead title in 2009 and was let go last year after 15 years on the mission.

In an emailed statement, JPL dismissed Coppedge's claims. In court papers, lawyers for the California Institute of Technology, which manages JPL for NASA, said Coppedge received a written warning because his co-workers complained of harassment.

They also said Coppedge lost his team lead status because of ongoing conflicts with others.

Caltech lawyers contend Coppedge was one of two Cassini technicians and among 246 JPL employees let go last year due to planned budget cuts.

The case has generated interest among supporters of intelligent design. The Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian civil rights group, and the Discovery Institute, a proponent of intelligent design, are both supporting Coppedge's case.

The National Center for Science Education, which rejects intelligent design as thinly veiled creationism, is also watching the case and has posted all the legal filings on its website.

Coppedge's attorney, William Becker, contends his client was singled out by his bosses because they perceived his belief in intelligent design to be religious. Coppedge had a reputation around JPL as an evangelical Christian, and interactions with co-workers led some to label him as a Christian conservative, Becker said.

In the lawsuit, Coppedge says he believes other things also led to his demotion, including his support for a state ballot measure that sought to define marriage as limited to heterosexual couples and his request to rename the annual holiday party a Christmas party.

Coppedge is seeking attorney's fees and costs, damages for wrongful termination and a statement from the judge that his rights were violated, said Becker.
