Wicca is a modern pagan, witchcraft religion

Wicca is a diverse religion with no central authority or figure defining it.

Wicca often involves the ritual practice of magic, though it is not always necessary

Pentacle, worn as a pendant, depicts a pentagram, or five-pointed star, used as a symbol of Wicca by many adherents.

Beliefs in Wicca range from hard polytheism to even monotheism.

Wicca is typically duotheistic, worshipping a god and goddess traditionally viewed as a mother goddess and horned god.

The term Wicca first achieved widespread acceptance when referring to the religion in the 1960s and 70s

Application of the word Wicca has given rise to "a great deal of disagreement and infighting".

The Goddess and the God may be regarded as the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine

The God and Goddess are generally seen as lovers and equals, the Divine Couple who together co-create the cosmos.

Traditionally the God is viewed as a Horned God, associated with nature, wilderness, sexuality, hunting and the life cycle

The Horned God is given various names according to the tradition, and these include Cernunnos, Pan, Atho and Karnayna.

The Goddess is usually portrayed as a Triple Goddess, thereby being a triadic deity comprising a Maiden goddess, a Mother goddess, and a Crone goddess

Some Wiccans, particularly from the 1970s onwards, have viewed the Goddess as the more important of the two deities, who is pre-eminent in that she contains and conceives all. In this respect, the God is viewed as the spark of life and inspiration within her, simultaneously her lover and her child.

Death Cal Cooper On Ghost Therapy

Death Cal Cooper On Ghost Therapy
I frequently talked to my mother in the days and months after she died. Sometimes I still do. I could feel her presence in her favourite armchair and wouldn't let other people sit there. Even now, I only let the cat sleep on that chair, which remains where it was when she was alive, by the window my mum liked to look out of and watch the world go by.

If I close my eyes and try to tune in to the realm of the spirits, I can sometimes hear her voice offering advice or just making a wry comment as she often would in life. Do you think that makes me weird? I used to think so, but after listening to Cal Cooper talk about ghost therapy at Goldsmith's Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit on Tuesday evening I realised I am far from alone. However, apparently few people readily admit they have been chatting with dead relatives because they are also worried others will think them weird.

Cal Cooper is doing a PhD at the University of Northampton, lectures on parapsychology and is the author of the book Telephone Calls from the Dead. His talk was about post-death experiences in the bereaved - meaning people seeing, hearing or otherwise sensing a loved one after they had died - and how these experiences can help them get over their grief.

A study by WD Rees in 1971 showed it was extremely common for people to sense the presence of a dead spouse or relative - perhaps seeing them and having conversations with them or just feeling they were close or dreaming about them. What's more, 85% of those people found the experience helpful. Very few were scared - despite ghosts normally being considered pretty scary things.

Later research showed that most apparitions of that kind occurred 24 hours before or after the death, with the peak time being at the moment of death. It can happen for months or even years afterwards though. It is a common practice for the window in the room of a dying person to be left open so that the spirit can leave and many nurses have reported seeing a mist passing out of a dead person.

Although most of those kinds of experiences are unexpected, other contact with dead loved ones is sought out - such as going to seances. Cal asked whether seances are a bad thing if those going to them feel that they help them. Obviously there is a problem if a medium charges large amounts of money from someone who can ill afford it, but if the seance is free and those who attend feel helped, what is the problem?

Most people who go to mediums are generally positive about the experience and it can be considered a form of counselling. It can strengthen a belief in the afterlife and give a sense of peace and comfort. Cal believes that any counsellor who has a bereaved person as a client could help them by listening to any spiritual stories they tell - such as seeing the ghost of a loved one - and "putting themselves in their shoes".

Most of the stories the bereaved relate about connectivity with the dead are helpful. The main positive thing that seems to come from them is a sense of hope - and, like Pandora's Box, hope is a very important thing to retain when you feel you have lost everything.

I thought the topic of ghost therapy and contact with the dead being helpful for the bereaved was particularly relevant at Samhain - or Halloween - when many pagans like to honour dead ancestors and sometimes try to contact them through seances or other rites or ceremonies. As Cal observed, ghosts need not be scary and can give hope at times of darkness.

"In the weeks around Halloween I am looking at death by blogging about all things from burial sites and ghost stories to examining our attitudes to death. Here are some links and previous related posts:"

Witchcraft History

Witchcraft History
Infused with mystery, fear, unbelievable and grim facts and records, Witchcraft History can be traced back to centuries.

The word 'Witchcraft' has been derived from the word 'Wicca' which means 'the wise one'. witchcraft has been seen as a magical phenomenon, a pagan worship or religion, sorcery, and others, at different periods in Witchcraft History.

The earliest records of the concept and practice of witchcraft can be traced to the early days of humankind when witchcraft was seen as magical a phenomenon that was invoked for magical rites which ensured good luck, protection against diseases, and other reasons.

However, it was not until 1000 AD that the practice of Witchcraft and witches invoked the wrath of priests, Christianity, and members of the society. Witchcraft, seen as a religion of the ancient and traditional pagan religion which worships the feminine, earthly, and masculine aspects of God, was considered as anti-Christian and a heresy.

Held to be against the declarations and beliefs of the Church, witches were considered as evil, making pacts and connections with the Devil. It was even believed that witches engaged in practices such as flying, invisibility, killing, taming black wolves and cats to spy on people, and others.

The belief in the existence of witches was strengthened particularly after Pope Innocent VIII issued a declaration in the 1498 confirming their existence in society, and inquisition increased, although in 1200, killing of witches had already become authorised by Pope Gregory IX.

The Inquisition thus began after 1200 on orders of the Church to discover the witches or heretics who were believed to be evil and against the Church. Full-fledged killing of witches was, however, recorded in the 1500s and 1600s.

The first crusade against witches was held in 1022 AD when a witch was burned to death. Witchcraft History echoes the terrible campaign against Witchcraft in Salem in 1692 in which 150 people were tried as suspects of practicing witchcraft.

People suspected as witches were usually burned at stakes, and those pleading their innocence were either stoned to death or even sometimes thrown in water to prove their innocence. Witches usually faced severe and painful deaths or punishments.

A juxtaposition of good as well as evil views, Witchcraft History is, thus, a stock of shocking, yet hypnotising incidents of humankind and their crusade against the practice of Witchcraft.

The Spell Of The Shell

The Spell Of The Shell
White Magic Spells Chants

To perform this spell, you must find a suitable shell in

shallow water. Take the shell and dry it thoroughly. Next,

place a symbol of your desire upon the surface of the shell.

The symbol must be made with a substance which will easily

wash off in water.

Place the shell upon the shore, so that the Tide will bring

waves across the shell. Take care to note the phase of the

Moon (waxing moon for the gain of something, waning for the

dissolving of something
). When the shell is in place, draw a

triangle in the sand, enclosing the shell completely.

The symbol upon the shell must be facing upwards (toward the

Moon
). Meaningful words, or phrases, may be placed upon the

shell also, or simply written in the sand (inside the

triangle
).

Finally, give the words of enchantment: (toward the moon)

Goddess of Moon, Earth, and the Sea,

Each wish in Thy name must come to be.

Powers and Forces which Tides do make,

Now summon Thy waves, my spell to take

Leave the area now, and the spell is set. Once the waves

come, then your wish will be taken out to the Old Ones. It

will usually take about 7 days for a Lunar spell to begin to

manifest, but can take as long as 28 days.

This type of magic is what we call "little works", and

belongs to the folk-magic level of Witchcraft. There are, of

course, much more involved spells, and such. But, I do love

the simplistic beauty of a spell like this.

Vistour Blog
Welcome and blessed be to my blog pls bare with me as this is my first blog and i have no idea what i,m doing. Ok if i,m right i think i should just put info on the stuff i know about wicca so here i go:). Well first off i study nocturnal wicca its like normal wicca just with slight changes. Well i guess the one thing that is misunderstood about this type of wicca is some ppl think you worship evil gods and goddesses. That couldnt be more wrong and sorry if i,m just telling you guys stuff you already knowOne thing i find useful to do is purify my aura there is one exercise i like to do that helps me feel strong and healthy. Get comfortable the visualize a ball of white light above your head. Feel the energy of the ball know that its filled with love and strength and peace. Try hard to feel these qualities in the energy of the ball. Now let the energy from the ball begin to flow down into you. The energy is a beautiful clear white light no matter how much light comes into you the ball will remain equally strong. For its true origin is the goddess and it is a source of boundless spiritual energy let the energy from the ball pour into you and flow throughout your body. Let it move out into your arms and legs down into your fingers and toes. Let the light expand beyond your body just an inch outward from your body then two inches then a few more. Till the light forms and oval let it grow until its 6 ft across now say to your self. "there is one power in the universe and i am a perfect manifestation of that power as such i will that the boundaries of my aura shall be strong and healthy repelling all unwanted energy while remaining open to positive and healing energy safe within these boundaries nothing can harm me for i am filled with the strength of the goddess by my will so mote it be and it is so" well thats it for today i hope it will help someone out there well till tomorrow have a great day blessed be ok one thing i find most true in my books is the goals of a witch they have the same idea in most books just with diff wording so here they are the 13 goals of a witch1 know your self2 know your craft3 learn4 apply knowledge with wisdom5 achieve balance6 keep your words in good order7 keep your thoughts in good order8 celebrate life9 attune with the cycles of the earth10 breathe and eat correctly11 exercise the body12 mediate13 honer the goddess and god

Weekly Lunar Reading And Magical Attributes January 6Th 13Th 2010

Weekly Lunar Reading And Magical Attributes January 6Th 13Th 2010

Moon Phase:

Waning Gibbous

Moon's Place

Libra

(moon enters Scorpio on Friday, Jan. 8th then Sagittarius on Sunday afternoon)

Lunar Reading:

Your hopes are being given new light with the beginning of the new calendar year. We must learn how to let go of the issues we faced or demons we battled. Things can only get better, if you choose to see it that way. The law of attraction and power of manifestation will play a vital role this year and the rest of your life. What you resist will continue to persist. Let go of the troubles and problems that seemed to once consume you. This is now who you are. Allow yourself to be free of those chains. Release it to what ever entity or force you believe in. Visualize the issues in a bag or on a plate and hand them over to God/Goddess. Ask the fairies to carry them away or a river to watch them down stream. Know when you let go of them that these issues or matters are gone forever, no longer your concern. They require no thought, as thought would only bring them back. Remeber, you have released them and God or the Universe has already taken care of it.

This week and month may pose for some communication issues. With both Mercury and Mars in retrograde, common miss-communications can happen easily. Often we experience dropped phone calls, internet connection issues, malfunctioning computers and other devices that allow us to psychically connect to each other for communication purposes. Sometimes this is the universe pushing you to physically see the person or attempt to to connect with them on some level telepathically. After all, a new era is coming and we have to start opening up somewhere. Why not start with the third eye and our spiritual and elemental instincts.

For the Magic Doers ">It is highly suggested that you take the time to cleanse all of your crystals and magical working devices in water. Bless them with the unconditional love the universe offers. Visualize particles of dust or energy floating down from the heavens and absorbing into your magical devices. Allow the energy to be absorbed into your body and soul as well. Be sure to search my archives for different cleansing and renewal rituals and meditations. One of my favorites is the body and bath cleansing meditation.

Any magic done now for such things as court cases and ridding ones self of a negative habit or issue is in perfect timing. Things will flow in your favor at this time with the current moon phase and astrological positioning. Rest easy and know the universe is playing out the best scenario for you, even if it may not feel like it at the moment.

Your Mission for this week:

Show patience with others and yourself. Give close ones the benefit of the doubt. Most likely they are just trying to help you, even if you don't agree with their way of showing it. Respect your elders, no matter the situation. They have still lived here more years physically than you and they are closer to their transition than you are. Keep in mind that those who are many years older than you have experinced different aspects of life and understand and have lived through many eras and changes. Even if you are the adult or grandmother yourself, head the advice of your elders, regardless of circumstances or personal differences. No, they don't always know best, but they have more life experience in years than you and that deserves a little bit of respect.

I have decided to give you a physical and emotional mission, should you choose to except it:

Choose one person in your life that you deeply care about and are extremely thankful for. Make sure this person is of the same sex and not your life partner or spouse. If you are a woman, then pick another woman that you are thankful is a part of your life. Write a physical letter to them, not an email or a short text message. Get out your pen and paper and let them know from the heart why you are grateful they are part of your life. Keep the letter purely positive, maybe even make a gratitude list of why you care about them. It's not about what they've done for you, it's simply why you are thankful for that particular person. Why wouldn't life be the same without them? Share your heart and allow that special someone to know why they mean so very much to you and play an important role in your life.

Feel free to come back to the blog and post how you spent your day. Share your happenings with fellow readers. :-)

Battling Demons Witchcraft Heresy And Reform In The Late Middle Ages By Michael D Bailey

"THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY IS MORE THAN ANY OTHER THE CENTURY OF THE PERSECUTION OF WITCHES." SO WROTE JOHAN HUIZINGA MORE THAN EIGHTY YEARS AGO IN HIS CLASSIC AUTUMN OF THE MIDDLE AGES. ALTHOUGH HUIZINGA WAS CORRECT IN HIS OBSERVATION, MODERN READERS HAVE TENDED TO FOCUS ON THE MORE SPECTACULAR WITCH-HUNTS OF THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES. NEVERTHELESS, IT WAS DURING THE LATE MIDDLE AGES THAT THE FULL STEREOTYPE OF DEMONIC WITCHCRAFT DEVELOPED IN EUROPE, AND THIS IS THE SUBJECT OF BATTLING DEMONS. "AT THE HEART OF THE STORY IS JOHANNES NIDER (D. 1438), A DOMINICAN THEOLOGIAN AND REFORMER WHO ALTERNATELY PERSECUTED HERETICS AND NEGOTIATED WITH THEM--A MAN WHO WAS BY FAR THE MOST IMPORTANT CHURCH AUTHORITY TO WRITE ON WITCHCRAFT IN THE EARLY FIFTEENTH CENTURY. NIDER WAS A MAJOR SOURCE FOR THE INFAMOUS MALLEUS MALEFICARUM, OR HAMMER OF WITCHES (1486), THE MANUAL OF CHOICE FOR WITCH-HUNTERS IN LATE MEDIEVAL EUROPE. TODAY NIDER'S REPUTATION RESTS SQUARELY ON HIS WITCHCRAFT WRITINGS, BUT IN HIS OWN DAY HE WAS BETTER KNOWN AS A LEADER OF THE REFORM MOVEMENT WITHIN THE DOMINICAN ORDER AND AS A WRITER OF IMPORTANT TRACTS ON NUMEROUS OTHER ASPECTS OF LATE MEDIEVAL RELIGIOSITY, INCLUDING HERESY AND LAY PIETY. BATTLING DEMONS PLACES NIDER IN THIS WIDER CONTEXT, SHOWING THAT FOR LATE MEDIEVAL THINKERS, WITCHCRAFT WAS ONE FACET OF A MUCH LARGER CRISIS PLAGUING CHRISTIAN SOCIETY. "

As the only English-language study to focus exclusively on the rise of witchcraft in the early fifteenth century, Battling Demons will be important to students and scholars of the history of magic and witchcraft and medieval religious history.

"In Battling Demons, Michael Bailey places the Dominican theologian Johannes Nider at the center of an emerging set of beliefs about diabolical sorcery and witchcraft in the fifteenth century. His argument is entirely original and will force those of us who study witchcraft to consider its implications not only for the late Middle Ages but also for the great persecutions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries." --Edward Peters, University of Pennsylvania

This book contains the stories of specific Witches, but it is ominously boss than special stories. It contains some spells, but it is ominously boss than a spell book. It describes some of the commandment and history of Witchcraft, but it is ominously boss than a commandment book.

This is a book about Witchcraft in black and white by Witches. Acquaint with are a wide-ranging catalog of Witches in Australia, tons of whom support been practising for decades. This book describes the experiences of modern Witches in their own words. I support in black and white my gift to this book as an one of the intelligentsia. I support finished tons being studying Witchcraft, but I did not desire to ring about Witchcraft.

Reasonably, this book is in black and white with Witches. Witches speak for themselves. Barrier and videotape make stereotypes of Witches as either evil citizens on the limits of foundation, or gorgeous gullible women obsessed with cruelty demons. Neither of these images of Witchcraft is exact. Whichever of the citizens in this book support academy degrees, although others support bookish themselves. Many work in professional jobs in the media, growth, health, information gear and businesses of certain types. Acquaint with are else Witches living in the command on alternative-lifestyle farms and some support in black and white chapters in this book. Still, Witchcraft is a religion of the civil as ominously as of the command.

The contributors to this book are Witches who are individually practitioners with being of practice and weighing up. Many are leaders of the portray Australian Witchcraft wage war. Others are rationally untried in Witchcraft, recounting it from the turn of the not long initiated. The contributors median the diversity of the portray Witchcraft wage war, with gathering from best of the traditions and varieties of Witchcraft in Australia. I support customarily found Witches to be compassionate citizens. I support been welcomed fashionable their circles, and support part tons meals and all right dishes of tea. I might not support put this book together short the supply of these citizens, too profuse to thank, and who recurrently wish not to be named healthy. They know who they are. In fastidious, even if, I would in the function of to thank Ambriel and Hiraeth who initial driven me to work on this book and suggested a list of repayment topics and contributors.

I would else in the function of to thank Lewis, who was Practising the Witch's Establish one of my initial Pagan road and rail network and who has away from home a lasting ill will in my drum up support. Witchcraft is a spirituality that celebrates life. I elaborate that this book goes some way to correcting the tons misunderstandings about Witchcraft that unused put up with in our foundation. I, as an one of the intelligentsia, look after guaranteed that the reliability of a portray spirituality is one of the key extroverted issues of our become old.

L Cabot

L Cabot
By BARRY SHLACHTER
Associated Press Writer
SALEM, Mass. (AP) -- Her eyes are heavy with black makeup. Her
dresses are flowing caftans of a satiny black material. And her
explosion of long black hair covers her shoulders and much of her
back.
Laurie Cabot is a witch, if there were any doubt, and is more
than proud to tell you so.
A visitor to her house may be told of the jeers and threats she
endured over the years for her unconventional appearance and her
beliefs in the pagan witch religion, Wicca. Passing motorists would shout to her children that she should be burned.
"When I divorced for the second time, I decided to live my life
totally as a witch and I didn't care what people thought,
" she
said, her fingers flashing 14 gold and silver rings. "And because
I began wearing traditional witch clothing, I had to make a living
as a witch."
Now she is a local celebrity, cashing in on her notoriety and
serving as a defender of others who share her beliefs.
Gov. Michael S. Dukakis proclaimed her Salem's "official
witch
" in 1975 for carrying out civic good works. And lately she
has spent much of her time rallying protesters against the state
film bureau which secured the filming in Massachusetts of John
Updike's novel, "The Witches of Eastwick."
Ms. Cabot denounced the book as "anti-women, anti-Christian and
anti-witch."
Despite an appearance that seems to confirm the broom-flying
stereotype, she asserts in a soft but insistent voice that witches
are not followers of the devil but rather decent, law-abiding
people you would want, and already may have, as neighbors.
Witches believe, she asserts, "Do as you will and harm none."
Pictures of witches as green-faced crones anger her and she
tells of marching into shops to rip up Halloween decorations. She
helped launch the Witches' League for Public Awareness in June to
protect her community's battered image.
In Salem, a historic town of 38,000 residents famous for its
17th century witch trials and where witchcraft now thrives as a
cottage industry, Laurie Cabot claims there are numerous practicing witches. Throughout the United States, her "guesstimate" is
several millions.
The twice divorced, 53-year-old witch lives with her two
daughters, five cats and 22 Teddy bears in an outwardly
undistinguished New England frame "salt box" on a quiet lane down
from A Pig in the Eye pub. She holds court around a broad table
with legs made from the curving roots of a tree.
"They are very quiet people who don't disturb anyone," said a
neighbor, Kevin O'Neil, a former embalmer who is now an autopsy
technician for Boston's medical examiner.
Her hard times, except for a recent attack by followers of
political extremist Lyndon LaRouche, appear behind her.
The Anaheim, Calif.-born former night club dancer is branching
out beyond her herb and potion shop, tarot card readings and
lectures on psychic powers. She's negotiating her entry into the
home video market with hopes to become the Jane Fonda of at-home
witchcraft instruction, she said.
Ms. Cabot teaches Witchcraft I, II, and III and other courses in
Salem and travels to New York City frequently to counsel Wall
Street investors at $200 for 30 minutes of her advice on what to
buy and sell, she said. She hopes to profit from a book she is
completing, "The Salem Witches' Handbook." But she accepts no
payment for treating people through what she calls her psychic
powers.
"I don't charge for healing but I do charge for everything
else,
" she smiled. Some patients come on their own, others are
referred to her by area doctors, she said.
One whose name she gave, Salem skin specialist Dr. John von
Weiss, told The Associated Press that he sent Laurie Cabot "six to
10
" people suffering from warts since the growths were known to
disappear through the power of suggestion.
"I had gotten a follow-up on a few people and it was good,"
Dr. von Weiss said of the witch's wart removal record.
Despite her success, he stopped referring patients to Ms. Cabot
in the late 1970s.
Asked why, the Salem dermatologist replied: "The occult is a
pecular thing, you know.
" Then, after a pause, he added, "I don't
really want to give an explanation."
Her high-profile marketing no doubt has created resentment, if
not jealousy, within the witch community.
"She does fit the media stereotype of the witch. But I changed
my perception over the past few years,
" said Margot Adler, a

The Meaning Of Witchcraft Pt 1

The Meaning Of Witchcraft Pt 1

The Meaning of Witchcraft by GERALD GARDNER

Part 1

My Directorship of the Museum of Magic and Witchcraft at Castletown, Isle of Man, brings me a great deal of correspondence from all parts of the world; some interesting, some abusive (a very little, just enough to enliven matters), some fantastic, and some funny in all senses of the word.

However, my more serious correspondents want to know the origin of witchcraft. Where, they ask, did it come from? What is behind this thing that obsessed the minds of men for centuries? Is it an underground cult of devil-worship? A dark thread running through history? An irruption of the supernatural into normal life? Or is it an enormous delusion? What is the meaning of it all?

This is a matter which of late years has exercised the ingenuity of a number of writers. These may be roughly divided into three schools. Firstly, those who take the severely rationalist view that witchcraft was a kind of mass hysteria, arising from psychological causes. Secondly, those who maintain that witchcraft is real, and that it is the worship and service of Satan, in whom its devotees appear to be great believers. This is the attitude taken by that very prolific writer, the late Montague Summers, and his many imitators. Thirdly, that school, headed by anthropologists like Dr. Margaret Murray, which has tried to look at the subject without either superstitious terrors and theological argument on the one hand, or materialistic incredulity on the other. This school of thought maintains that witchcraft is simply the remains of the old pagan religion of Western Europe, dating back to the Stone Age, and that the reason for the Church's persecution of it was that it was a dangerous rival. I personally belong to this third school, because its findings accord with my own experience, and because it is the only theory, which seems to me to make sense when viewed in the light of the facts of history.

Perhaps I had better state briefly what that experience is. I am at present the Director of the only museum in the world, so far as I know, which is exclusively concerned with magic and witchcraft. I was a Civil Servant in the Far East (Malaya) until my retirement, and I made a large collection of magical instruments, charms, etc., which formed the nucleus of the present collection here. I am also an archaeologist and an anthropologist, and through these studies I became interested in the part played in the life of mankind by magical beliefs, and by what people did as a result of these beliefs.

When I was out East, before I had any contact with witchcraft in Britain, I investigated much native magic without finding anything, which could not be explained by telepathy, hypnotism, suggestion or coincidence, and frankly I considered magic as an instance of the curious things that people will believe. In those days I was very much interested in Dr. Margaret Murray's theory that witchcraft was the remains of an ancient religion; but as all authorities seemed agreed that while there was evidence that some people may have been witches, there was not the slightest evidence that witches had ever been organized into covens; and as Charles Godfrey Leland, who had known many witches in Italy and elsewhere, and wrote a lot about them, never mentioned any coven or any organization, I dismissed witchcraft as something which had possibly happened once, but even if it had existed it had been "burnt out" three hundred years ago.

The earlier books I read on the subject all seemed to agree to a certain extent. They said that witches existed everywhere, and were both male and female. They were intensely wicked people. They worshipped the Devil, often in the form of a heathen god (but then, all heathen gods were the Devil). They had a big organization, regular religious ceremonies on fixed dates, a priesthood with priests, priestesses and officers, and an organized form of religion; though their deity might be called "a god" and "the Devil" almost in the same sentence. This was explained by saying that all non-Christian gods were really the Devil in disguise.

However, in the late 17th and the 18th centuries public opinion seemed to change. In spite of the strong views of John Wesley and other clergymen, people did not believe in witches any more, to the extent that when two clergymen induced a jury to convict Jane Wenham of talking to the Devil in the form of a cat, and she was sentenced to death for this in 1712, the judges protested and she was released. In 1736 the penal laws against witchcraft were repealed; and I did not think that anyone, with the exception of the Rev. Montague Summers, dared hint that there might be anything in witchcraft today without being laughed at. Charles Godfrey Leland had been regarded as a romancer who had written up a few Italian fortunetellers, and while Dr. Margaret Murray was known as a good anthropologist, it was thought that she was writing about things that happened three or four hundred years ago, when people were superstitious, and believed silly things.

However, after Dr. Murray's books appeared, some other people were bold enough to admit that there were some witches left, but said that they were only village fortune-tellers, impostors who knew nothing about the subject, and there never had been any organization, and anyone who thought otherwise was just being imaginative. I was of these opinions in 1939, when, here in Britain, I met some people who compelled me to alter them. They were interested in curious things, reincarnation for one, and they were also interested in the fact that an ancestress of mine, Grizel Gairdner, had been burned as a witch. They kept saying that they had met me before. We went through everywhere we had been, and I could not ever have met them before in this life; but they claimed to have known me in previous lives. Although I believe in reincarnation, as many people do who have lived in the East, I do not remember my past lives clearly; I only wish I did. However, these people told me enough to make me think. Then some of these new (or old) friends said, "You belonged to us in the past. You are of the blood. Come back to where you belong."

I realized that I had stumbled on something interesting; but I was half initiated before the word "Wicca" which they used hit me like a thunderbolt, and I knew where I was, and that the Old Religion still existed. And so I found myself in the Circle, and there took the usual oath of secrecy, which bound me not to reveal certain things.

In this way I made the discovery that the witch cult, that people thought to have been persecuted out of existence, still lived. I found, too, what it was that made so many of our ancestors dare imprisonment, torture and death rather than give up the worship of the Old Gods and the love of the old ways. I discovered the inner meaning of that saying in one of Fiona MacLeod's books: "The Old Gods are not dead. They think we are."

I am a member of the Society for Psychical Research, and on the Committee of the Folklore Society; so I wanted to tell of my discovery. But I was met with a determined refusal. "The Age of Persecution is not over," they told me; "give anyone half a chance and the fires will blaze up again." When I said to one of them, "Why do you keep all these things so secret still? There's no persecution nowadays!" I was told, "Oh, isn't there? If people knew what I was, every time a child in the village was ill, or somebody's chickens died, I should get the blame for it. Witchcraft doesn't pay for broken windows."

I can remember as a boy reading in the papers of a woman being burned alive in Southern Ireland as a witch; but I could not believe that there could be any persecution nowadays in England. So, against their better judgment, they agreed to let me write a little about the cult in the form of fiction, a historical novel where a witch says a little of what they believe and of how they were persecuted. This was published in 1949 under the title of High Magic's Aid.

In 1951 a very important event occurred. The Government of the day passed the Fraudulent Mediums Act, which repealed and replaced the last remaining Witchcraft Act, under which spiritualists used to be prosecuted in modern times. This Act is, I believe, unique in legally recognizing the existence of genuine mediumship and psychic powers.

I thought that at last commonsense and religious freedom had prevailed; but even so, the passage of this Act was highly obnoxious to certain religious bodies which had been preaching against Spiritualism for years and trying to outlaw it as "the work of Satan," together with any other societies to which they objected, including Freemasonry and, of course, witchcraft.

About a year previously, this Museum had been opened, and I had flattered myself that showing what witchcraft really is, an ancient religion, would arouse no hostility in any quarter. I was to find out in due course how wrong I was!

Any attempt to show witchcraft in anything even remotely resembling a favorable light, or to challenge the old representation of it as something uniformly evil and devilish, or even to present it as a legitimate object of study, can still arouse the most surprising reactions. The virtues of humanism, which Charles Saltman defined as "sensitivity, intelligence and erudition, together with integrity, curiosity and tolerance," have still quite a long way to go in their struggle against the mentality, which produced the Malleus Malejicarum.

In 1952 Pennethorne Hughes wrote a book, Witchcraft, which gave a very good historical account of witchcraft, but stated that while in mediaeval times witches had a fully worked-out ritual of their own which they performed, modern witches were simply perverts who celebrated "Black Masses," which he described as being blasphemous imitations of the Christian Mass. This made some of my friends very angry, and I managed to persuade them that it might do good to write a factual book about witchcraft, and so I wrote Witchcraft Today.1 In writing this latter book, I soon found myself between Scylla and Charybdis. If I said too much, I ran the risk of offending people whom I had come to regard highly as friends. If I said too little, the publishers would not be interested. In this situation I did the best I could. In particular, I denied that witches celebrated the Black Mass, or that they killed animals-or even un-baptised babies-as blood sacrifices.

One of the first questions I had asked witches as soon as I had got "inside" was, What about the Black Mass?" They all said, "We don't know how to perform it, and if we did, what would be the point of doing so?" They also said, "You know what happens at our meetings. There is the little religious ceremony, the greeting of the Old Gods; then any business, which has to be talked over, or perhaps someone wants to do a rite for some purpose; next there is a little feast and a dance; then you have to hurry for the last bus home! There is no time or place for any nonsense of 'Black Masses,' and anyhow why should we want to do one?"

I think this is just common sense. To a Roman Catholic who believes in Transubstantiation, that is, that the bread and wine of the Mass are literally changed into the flesh and blood of Christ, a ceremonial insult to the Host would be the most awful blasphemy; but witches do not believe this, so it would simply be absurd to them to try to insult a piece of bread.

Eclectic Witch In Jeans

Eclectic Witch In Jeans
A few days ago a blogger friend sent me an email that included the following line: "I really do not know how to begin to incorporate paganism into my daily life." I replied that "for me to be Pagan is not to walk around in robes and dancing around bonfires for every holiday. Paganism is that feeling you get inside that tells you that the world is alive and that you and everyone else are part of something amazing; something worth protecting. So don't worry if you don't make candles for Beltaine, or if you don't burn a Yule log at the end of the year. What matters is that in your heart of hearts you know that for the world to make sense, there has to be a God and Goddess aspect of Nature, and that you as an individual have the key to your own destiny." Today, she resumed our email exchange to let me know how relieved she was to find out that robe wearing or participating in elaborate rituals are not Pagan requirements. She added that her "main focus is to have a strong belief system and to know what that is for [her] personally as well as to have a way to connect to others and nature."

I'm happy to know that I helped a bit. I know that many traditional Witches who read this post will probably shake their heads. I'm saying this because I have been told more than once that I'm not a real Witch, and the fact that I don't wear a robe or belong to any coven, has been used as a justification for the statement.

Well, I'm an Eclectic Witch and my gods, people who matter to me, and I know it-that is enough for me. I raise energy in jeans, skyclad, in a pink dress, in camouflaged uniform... and as of today my gods haven't objected to my dress code or to my eclectic reverence.

How do you feel about formality and uniformity when it comes to religious worship and celebration?

What Is Science

What Is Science
I would emphasize consensus: Science is the attempt by skeptical and curious men and women -- let's call them scientists -- to gain consensus knowledge of the world, by trying as best they can to minimize cultural bias (tradition, religion, politics, ethnicity, gender, etc.) and let nature have its say.

To this end, they have devised a number of tools to ply their trade: quantitative observation, mathematical language, peer review, institutionalized doubt, the principle of parsimony, and -- above all -- the willingness to say "I don't know."

It is because scientific knowledge of the world is consensus knowledge that those of us who are scientists only in spirit embrace it with confidence. And, of course, we recognize that modern medicine, sanitation, technology, and wealth creation all stand as monuments to the effectiveness of the scientific way of knowing.

But it is precisely because we recognize the limits of science that we mind too poets, artists, musicians, and all who give creative expression to our intuition -- amply confirmed by the history of science -- that there is more to the world than what presently meets the eye. "What is spiritual about the manifest is not the part that leaves tracks in the snow," says Mary Oliver in one of her aphorisms.

Morgan enters the room hiding from Sky and Hunter. The room is filled with lots of bookshelves with books on "WICCA". She determines that the room must belong to Selene, Cal's mother's office. As she is exploring all the books she wonders if Selene will let her borrow any of the books. She finds her own mothers "BOOK OF SHADOWS" among all the books. While she is reading her mother's "BOOK OF SHADOWS" Selene and Cal walk in.I love reading books about witches and "WICCA". Prompt In The Media

Prompt In The Media
Pagans recurrently get a bad rap what it comes to movies and TV. If witches aren't unconscious having green sheet and a giant wart (think "Dead to the world Good looks"), they are at least seen as useful to a darker side of candor (as in "Jaded Blow" or other movies with the hamlet refugee being a witch). Being they are unconscious in a condescending positive light, it's very light-hearted and less realistic (think "Delighted" and "Sensible Magical"). Next grant is the magic of Trouble Potter that is condescending about mirage.

Do you know of any movies or TV shows that cast Pagans and/or Witches in a positive and realistic light? The same as would it standstill to get a gap touch of witches out in the media these days? Would gap media revealing help heave attentiveness, do you think? Deposit this separate and run with it... Get your friends practicing in the treatise, too.

Water Faeries From Working With Fairies

Water Faeries From Working With Fairies
Dampen Fairies (Plug up from In force Sooner than Fairies)

One life form of water, from the least drift to the older marine, has its own cynical fairy, living base the beauty. In Wales, fairy maidens called the Gwragedd Annwn aware less the lakes. They are extremely nimble and intermittently venture ashore to knock around whatsoever lovers and husbands. One such Lady of the Team, called Vivienne or Nimue, appears in the stories of Emperor Arthur, supplying him with Excalibur, a magical sword from the Otherworld.

The sea is as narrowly colonized with fairies as any place on earth. In its sad aware mermaids and mermen, nymphs, and others. These spirits direct the weather and the water, get bigger storms, and believe the power to rummage shipwreck, or cattle a ship competent. In ancient era, it was the practice to soothe the spirits of the sea with a willing victim beforehand experience out on a air travel.

Close by the sea, several sea fairies are embodied as acute and seductive, but uneven. The best accepted of these is the mermaid. It is viable that the narrative of the mermaid has its start in the goddesses who rose from the sea, dear Venus/Aphrodite, or the lure tailed Atargatis and Derceto. The sea is allied with the Great Close relative Divine being whose names clinch Maia, Mary, Mara, Marian, Maria, and Miriam; all names consequent from a vile word for sea. Sea goddesses are prevalently in addition goddesses of love and the moon, sketch the tides, rivers, dew and matter of whatsoever life. Overcast mariners would believe a tattoo of a star to honour the goddess Venus as they steered by her star. She was in addition the example of the ship figureheads.

In the least water fairies are unfriendly and horrible. Jenny Greenteeth lives in the River Ribble in Northern England. As soon as green weeds wave in the mellow water, it is a sign that Peggy is lurking less the beauty, accommodating to knock around sundry victim. She haunts the stepping stones present Brungerley and every seven excitement claims a whatsoever life by grabbing some ill-fated traveller and pulling him less the water to overwhelm. Worry are warned not to go present the water, or Jenny Greenteeth tendency knock around them.

Jenny is lately one such fairy. Up-to-the-minute is Peg Raider who haunts the River Tees. She is in addition green with long hair and wiry teeth. If population wade in the water she pulls on their ankles and drags them down to overwhelm. Peg O'Nell in addition difficulty the willing victim of a life every seven excitement and tendency be pleased with a thin animal or bird, bit if this is not imminent she tendency knock around a whatsoever life.

THE POWERS OF Dampen

Dampen has repeatedly been considered to be a living thing, or certainly to believe the power of gratifying, bestowing and even restoring life- as well as self first-rate of steal it. One ancient village honoured springs, wells, and water sources as sacred. The Celts and others sacrificed treasure to lake and spurt spirits. Rivers were worshipped by the Druids and were whispered to each believe their citizen water spirits that required sacrifices to be completed to them. The River Tweed is alleged to solicit a yearly willing victim, but but the Ranch is bigger famished.

Tweed says to Ranch,

"Because gars ye Tin sae still?

Says Ranch to Tweed, "

"Then again ye run Wi' tear, and I Tin slaw,

Whaurye droon ae man,

I droon twa"

Fair as water takes the form of whatever it is poured at home, water fairies believe the power to alter their variety. If you anger them by polluting their water, they may increase as nauseating green uneven hags to bury you with a quick blizzard, or overwhelm you less the bearing. If they knock around a undergo to you, they constrain increase as creamy golden haired youths or maids, wooing you with harmonious fairy music. A example of water fairies is the Greek sea god Proteus, accepted as The Old Man of the Sea who is the maximum masterful shapeshifter of all. He is intelligent to suppose any variety he requirements. Record water fairies are alleged to be shapeshifters, maybe for instance of the willowy and debatable situation of water itself, which is lately certain variety by the send that holds it.

Dampen is glutinous, dear the blood that flows by our veins. Dampen can mirror in a impress of dew, a gentle rain to the frenzied torrent or the opening of the marine wave. A track of water tendency in due course wear banned a heap. All life started in the profligate raw chowder of the mass, exact as the uterine waters of your mother's womb assure you. It is allied with emotions and stance, the immersed sensitivity. Dampen can be the stability of the uterine waters of the womb, the cleansing drift, the highly seasoned fund of the immersed sensitivity, the decent spurt, the concoction of initiation, the evolution of the tides and the power of the sea to cede adequate or new idea with its hurricane.

Dampen is a sweeping symbol of cleansing and new beginning. In the least bodies of water believe healing powers, dear the Prize Righteous in Glastonbury. Dampen heals; rarely water that flows east to west is empowered by the mutiny sun at the vernal equinox, May Day and Midsummer. Any drift that runs north to south has magical properties as does the place somewhere two streams meet; these were repeatedly the places for magic and Otherworld communication. Pools and lakes are magical entrances to the Otherworld. Everyplace three streams harmonize was forever considered to be a rarely dedicated place for magic somewhere population gathered to downhearted the water as it had magical properties.

Dampen is ruled by the moon which pulls the ebb and matter of the tides, and several water fairies are alleged to increase by moonlight. Under the full moon is the best time to communication them. Our bodies too key to the moon's tides, as they are mainly water. We are won over by the moon tides practically as significantly as water elementals, bit bigger sensitively.

Dampen relates to the ebb and matter of actions, the natural tides of life, the emotions, love and the spiritual barrier of love. The social order with a lot of water in the psychological make-up can be jejune, idealist, psychic, enriching, poetic, farming and seer. On the other hand, they can in addition be self-involved, self-important, vapid, materialistic, ruthless, fickle, full, vulnerable, quiet volatile and out of true.

The matter is as soon as the stream is coming in, and is the time for magic uneasy with immaturity, appraisal and so on. In a state of high excitement stream is as soon as the stream reaches climax up the shore and is the time for healing and love magic. The ebb is as soon as the stream is thinning and this is the time for sanitization and banishing. Low stream is the lowest possible place the sea reaches on the shore that day, and this time is best disappeared in highly seasoned meditation. The climax stream in the month forever corresponds with the full moon, and this is the best time for water fairy communication.

MERMAIDS are untrue creatures who believe the high-class bodies of acute women and the tails of lure, bit the Scots say that under the lure scales are repeated whatsoever legs. They may intermittently be seen sunning themselves on rocks as they observe at home mirrors although blow-dry their long hair. Close by the Sirens, they believe harmonious voices and sing to lure whatsoever lovers at home the sad of the bearing, or to summon storms that flatten ships. The in advance church took a dim view of mermaids, saying that they were demons who tempted the sporting. In Irish narrative, St Patrick banished old Pagan women from the earth by veer them at home mermaids. The mermaid of Iona was imminent redemption if she relinquished her sea home, but this she was unable to do and her blubber became the grey-green gravel of the island's seaside. Close by other fairies, mermaids are alleged to believe no souls but they can extract one by marrying a whatsoever. They make good wives and paternal mothers and for this ground several men believe sought them. The People McVeagh in Sutherland clasp drip from a union along with a mermaid and a fisherman. To choose a mermaid it is in the early hours principal to deem her magic cap, her belt or comb and disguise it. If she finds it she tendency return to the sea, which is her testimony thrill. In a Scottish report Johnny Croy got criticize this by acerbic a seven-year marriage with a mermaid and film set to bestow with her at the end of the consideration. They legally sailed banned to sea on one occasion the seven excitement, together with six of their children, having to bestow the seventh for instance Johnny's mother had in demand the consideration of branding it with a meet. Common sense in mermaids was slothful comprehensive in coastal areas of Britain in the nineteenth century and as clearly as 1947 an eighty-year- old fisherman from the Island of Filth claimed he had seen a mermaid present the seaside, blow-dry her hair. The word 'mermaid' may deem from the French for sea, mer, or be a lying of meremaid or merrymaid. It is viable that the concept of mermaids derives from ancient beliefs of lure tailed goddesses such as Atargatis, the Semitic moon and love goddess, accepted in Greece as Derketo, and from consequent forms of such deities dear Aphrodite who was shallowness innate in the sea. Aphrodite [Roman Venus] is the goddess of love, fertility, and fair naval, repeatedly accompanied by her sacred dolphins, Tritons and Tritonids. Close by mermaids she is depicted with a mirror and comb, the Greek names of which result in the female vulva. In in advance astrology her mirror represented the furrow Venus. Close by the goddesses, mermaids are connected with love and the moon. In Tudor England mermaid was a prepare for a prostitute, with Anne Boleyn self characterised as a mermaid.

SEA MITHER [sea Close relative] appears in the lore of Orkney. She represents the powers of summer and life, is the mother of all that lives in the sea and brings drifting silence to the islet waters. Her enemy is Teran, the spirit of winter, who stirs up the bearing and winter gales. One origin, at the equinox, the Sea Mither begins to battle with Teran to bring in the summer. At the end of the quarrel, which may go on for weeks, he is leap and ensnared at the bring to an end of the sea. With the Mither tendency bring warmth and come up back to the sea and the islands until the autumn, as soon as the Teran escapes and they quarrel taking into consideration over at the autumn equinox. This time Teran is delighted and the sea Mither is banished. Concluded the winter, he tendency wreak chaos on each one sea and land, pounding up storms, bringing ice and standoffish, and drowning the fishermen. Cunning at the bring to an end of the marine the Sea Mither hears their cries and waits for origin, as soon as she tendency control taking into consideration bigger.

Lady OF THE Team is a nimble fairy that appears in one of the Arthurian tales. She quick the overprotect Lancelot from his real mother and deceased with him at home the sad of a lake somewhere she amorously brought him up in her marine state, preparing him for truth. She in addition offered Arthur with his magical sword Excalibur, a gift from the land of the fairy, whose skin defended its homeowner from harm. In the least grip her Vivienne, in the Morte d'Arthur Thomas Mallory called her Nimue and she has in addition been called Niniane. She may believe been one of the Gwragedd Annwn, the Welsh fairy maidens who aware less lakes in criminal world kingdoms.

Jenny Greenteeth is a water fairy of the River Ribble in Northern England. As soon as green weeds wave in the mellow water, it indicates that Peggy is lurking less the beauty, accommodating to knock around sundry victim.

The River Ribble was sacred to Minerva modish the Roman route of Britain, and to an foreigner water goddess beforehand that, and Peg and Jenny are normal to be folk musing of this goddess. Whatsoever sacrifices may taking into consideration believe been completed to the water deities, and this may testimony for marauding report such as Jenny.

Such practices sit out in folk tales, dear the story of the Scottish guardian water-demons. It is alleged that in melancholy era, as soon as a retreat was sacked, a clever servant constrain plan to throw away some apportion of the family treasure at home a block fund. On one attempt, a diver was brought in to bring the treasure to the beauty, but as soon as he dived, he encountered the water guardian of the lake who told him to bestow hurriedly and not come back. On the other hand, the diver disobeyed and moments on one occasion his zoom scrabble his argument and lungs were found afloat on the beauty of the water, tatty out by the demon.

Dampen FAIRIES

Hand over are broad figures of water fairies in circles the world. These fairies are grumpy in forename and can either curse with storms or drowning or bless with treasure or the power of healing or magic.
