Voodoo Adherents Invite Visitors Into Their World

If you'd like to explore the other side-the spiritual or paranormal side-of New Orleans, focus on Voodoo, an ancient African religion still alive in the city.

New Orleans holds a particular fascination for people who are interested in spiritual beliefs and the paranormal. Indeed, New Orleans is supposed to have more than its share of spirits and hauntings. But still something else gives New Orleans an edge over other American cities as far entry to "the other side" is concerned. It is a belief in, and a practice of, voodoo.

"Voodoo" means "spirit" or "mystery." It was brought to New Orleans during the early 18th century by slaves who came from what is now Benin in West Africa. Voodoo adherents believe in the existence of one god, below which powerful spirits operate and exert influence on daily life events concerning family, love, money, happiness, and revenge.

During the 19th century, Voodoo queens became central figures in New Orleans. The most revered was Marie Laveau. She acted as an oracle, conducted rituals, performed exorcisms, and offered sacrifices to spirits from behind her cottage on St. Anne Street in the French Quarter.

How many New Orleans residents still believe in and practice Voodoo is unknown. But the major focus of New Orleans Voodoo practice today seems to be on serving others and favorably influencing life events by connecting with spirits or ancestors. Methods used to do so include readings, spiritual baths, special diets, prayer, and personal ceremonies.

The practice of Voodoo is a major tourist attraction in New Orleans. There are shops selling voodoo candles, charms, dolls, oils, and powders. The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, located in the French Quarter for 38 years, gives visitors a lot of fascinating information about Voodoo, as well as a feel for it.

The museum traces New Orleans Voodoo back to ancient Africa, where the 7,000-year-old religion began, and describes its Native-American, European, and Haitian influences. In the museum visitors can hear the sounds of Voodoo's ritual drumming and chanting and view historic Voodoo artifacts, some belonging to Laveau. There is an altar that presents skulls and bones to ancestors and asks for their guidance and protection. The museum also offers visitors a walking tour to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, where Laveau is buried, as well as private ritual services such as psychic readings, Voodoo weddings, special blessings, or hex removals.

Voodoo should especially captivate visitors to APA's annual meeting because of its possible influence on people's mental and physical health.

During the early 20th century, for example, Harvard neurologist Walter Cannon, M.D., made some seminal discoveries about human physiology. For instance, he originated the concept of the "fight or flight" response. But Cannon also collected anecdotes from around the world about people who had died after being "cursed." He published these findings in a 1942 paper titled "Voodoo Death." And in this paper he put forth the hypothesis "that 'voodoo' death may be real, and that it may be explained as due to shocking emotional stress-to obvious or repressed terror."

Then in the June 2005 Psychosomatic Medicine, Richard Lane, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona, and colleagues reported study findings that supported Cannon's hypothesis. Lane's study included 25 survivors of cardiac arrest who showed no evidence of coronary heart disease. The study also included a comparison group of 25 heart attack survivors with documented coronary heart disease. Subjects were interviewed to learn how much emotional stress they had experienced during the 24 hours preceding their cardiac arrest or heart attack. Results for the cardiac arrest and heart attack groups were compared. Significantly more of the cardiac arrest group than the heart attack group had experienced moderate or severe emotional stress during the period evaluated, suggesting that strong emotions in the absence of underlying coronary heart disease-say, fear induced by a voodoo curse-might be able to stop the heart and cause death.

Indeed, "in Walter Cannon's famous study of 'voodoo death,' sudden death occurred within 24 to 48 hours of a curse being inflicted," Lane and his colleagues noted in their paper. "[Yet] autopsies were not performed to determine whether those victims had preexisting heart disease. [But] in the current study... structural heart disease that could cause sudden death was absent... [yet cardiac arrest still occurred]."

Many people dismiss voodoo as a cult or superstition. Others, however, truly believe in its powers. So why don't you visit the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum and draw your own conclusions?

The Sutra Of The Dog Life Ascetic

Is this funny? To me, Punna and Seniya are the Abbot and Costello or Laural and Hardy of the sutras. I find their questioning of the Buddha about the other's future life instead of their own to be touching and hilarious at the same time. I laugh every time I read it.

This is my retelling of the Kukkuravatika Sutta based on the translation by Nanamoli Bhikkhu.

Thus have I heard. One time these two ascetics walked into a vihara where the Buddha was staying temporarily.

Punna was an ox-functioning ascetic who imitated the life of an ox. He moved with slow deliberate motions. He ate only vegetables. Seniya was a naked dog-function ascetic who imitated the life of a dog even to the point of never wearing clothes, always lying on the floor, and eating food that is thrown on the ground.

The two politely exchanged greetings and small talk with the Blessed One. Seniya, naked with his hair uncut and uncombed, sat to the side of Buddha curled up like a dog. Punna sat too beside him.

Punna and Seniya were the best of friends, but they were each jealous of the animal duty they felt called to practice and they teased often each other saying things like, "You dog you will never get to heaven acting like a dog, only an ox is a noble creature who shows the way to heaven." or "You dumb ox, you will never get enlightened acting like a cow, only by living the freedom of a dog will you find true liberation." Though they teased each other, they remained true companions to each other.

As they settled down and knowing the Buddha's reputation for having the power to know people's future lives, Punna asked, with a sly grin, "Blessed One, Seniya here is a dog's-life ascetic. He really tries hard and is diligent to live like a dog. He even eats from the ground when a donor throws his food down. What is going to become of him? What will be his future destination in rebirth?"

Buddha said, "Oh Punna, please don't ask me that! Let it be. People aren't meant to know what their future lives are going to be."

But now Punna was really curious and repeated his request. "Buddha, come on, Seniya is a really good dog. Isn't that going to make his future wonderful? What's going to come of him?"

And again Buddha said, "No Punna, don't ask me this kind of question. Enough, let it be."

And a third time Punna, said, "Honorable One, Seniya does what is really hard to do. And he's done if for a long time, too. He doesn't even wear clothes. He has lived like a dog with no regard for his shame as a human. He really deserves to hear what his efforts will get him."

Buddha said, "Well, since I certainly can't talk you out of it Punna, by saying 'Enough. Let it be.' I'll answer you. Punna, when a person acts like a dog, walks like a dog, barks like a dog, scratches like a dog, eats like a dog, sleeps like a dog, and fully and unstintingly performs like a dog, then on the dissolution of the body after death they will be reborn in the company of dogs. When you live like a dog and die like a dog, then you will be reborn as a dog. That is, at least if you are truly a dog. But if while acting like a dog a person thinks, 'By being a dog I will get to heaven faster, I will be reborn in heaven after my death, because I gave up my humanity and demonstrated the great goal of unattachment by acting like a dog I will be reborn as a greater or lesser heavenly being where the streets are paved with gold and the days are filled with bliss." If a person acting like a dog has these misguided thoughts of heaven, then of course their wrong views about how things work will lead them straight to hell, they will be reborn directly into hell where they will be whipped, kicked, and starved like a dog."

On hearing this, Seniya began to cry and shed great tears. The Buddha said, "See Punna, you had to ask even though I told you, 'Let it be. Do not ask me that.'"

Seniya said, "It's okay Blessed One, I'm not weeping just because of what you have said. These are not just tears of self-pity; they are tears of joy at hearing the truth from the lips of the Blessed One. But now Venerable sir, please tell us, here is Punna the ox-function ascetic who spends all his time living the plain and simple life of an ox. What will be his karmic reward in the next life?"

Buddha said, "Oh Seniya, please don't ask me that! Let it be. People aren't meant to know what their future lives are going to be."

But now Seniya was even more curious and repeated his request. "Buddha, come on, Punna is a really great ox. Isn't that going to make his future sacred and joyful? What's going to come of him?"

And again Buddha said, "No Seniya, don't ask me this kind of question. Enough, let it be."

And a third time Seniya, said, "Honorable One, Punna does what is really hard to do. And he's done if for a long time, too. He doesn't think of wealth, fame or power. He has lived like an ox with no regard for his shame as a human. Doesn't he really deserve to hear what his efforts will get him?"

Buddha said, "Well, since I certainly can't talk you out of it Seniya, by saying 'Enough. Let it be.' I'll answer you. Seniya. When a person acts like an ox, walks like an ox, eats like an ox, sleeps like an ox, and fully and unstintingly performs like an ox, then on the dissolution of he body after death they will be reborn in the company of oxen. When you live like an ox and die like an ox, then you will be reborn as a ox. That is, at least if you are truly an ox. But if while acting like an ox a person thinks, 'By being an ox I will get to heaven faster, I will be reborn in heaven after my death, because I gave up my humanity and demonstrated the great goal of unattachment by acting like an ox. I will be reborn as a greater or lesser heavenly being where the streets are paved with gold and the days are filled with bliss." If a person acting like an ox has these mistaken thoughts of heaven, then of course their wrong views about how things work will lead them straight to hell, they will be reborn directly into hell where they will be whipped, yoked and put to terribly tedious and tiring labor like an ox."

When this was said, Punna wept and shed tears. Then the Blessed One said to Seniya, "See, I could not persuade you to remain silent,"

Punna said, "Honored One, I am not weeping because the Blessed One has told me this. I have confidence in the Blessed One and know the Blessed One will teach us the Dharma in such a way that we may abandon our animal functions and practice the way."

The Buddha said, "Punna, listen and heed well what I shall say."

"Yes, venerable," he replied.

The Blessed One said: "Punna, there are four kinds of karma that I proclaim since I have had realization myself with direct knowledge. What are the four? They are dark karma with dark ripening, bright karma with bright ripening, dark-and-bright karma with dark-and-bright ripening, and karma that is not dark and not bright with neither-dark-nor-bright ripening that leads instantly to the exhaustion of karma.

"What is dark karma with dark ripening? It is when someone produces a bodily act with affliction, one produces a verbal act with affliction, or one produces a mental act with affliction. By so doing, that one acting like that reappears in a world with affliction. When that happens, the afflictions of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind touch the person. Being touched by these, one then feels afflicting feelings deeply painful as in the case of beings in hell. Thus a being's own rebirth is due to the being: One reappears owing to the karmic acts one has performed. When one has reappeared, the contacts of the six senses touch one. Thus I say all beings are heirs of their karmas. This is called dark karma with dark ripening.

"And what is bright karma with bright ripening? It is when someone produces a bodily act without affliction, one produces a verbal act without affliction, and one produces a mental act without affliction. By doing so, the one acting like that reappears in a world without affliction. When that happens, the unafflicting contacts of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind touch the person. Being touched by these, one feels unafflicted feelings entirely pleasant as in the case of the the gods of Resplendently Radiant Glory. Thus a being's reappearance is due to the being: one reappears owing to the karmas one has performed. When one has reappeared, the six contacts touch one. Thus I say all beings are heirs of their karmas. This is called bright karma with bright ripening.

"What is dark-and-bright karma with dark-and-bright ripening? This is when someone produces a bodily act both with and without affliction, one produces a verbal act both with and without affliction, and one produces a mental act both with and without affliction. By doing so, one reappears in a world both with and without affliction. When that happens, both afflicting and unafflicting contacts of the six senses touch one. Being touched by these, one feels afflicting and unafflicting feelings with mingled pleasure and pain as in the case of human beings and some heavenly beings and some inhabitants of the states of deprivation. Thus a being's reappearance is due to the being: one reappears owing to the karmas one has performed. When one has reappeared, sense contacts touch him. Thus I say all beings are heirs of their karmas. This is called dark-and-bright karma with dark-and-bright ripening.

"What is neither-dark-nor-bright karma with neither-dark-nor-bright ripening that leads to the exhaustion of karma? As to the previous kinds of karma, any choice in abandoning the kind of karma that is dark with dark ripening, any determination in abandoning the kind of karma that is bright with bright ripening, and any decision in abandoning the kind of karma that is dark-and bright with dark-and-bright ripening: this is called neither-dark-nor-bright karma with neither-dark-nor-bright ripening.

"These are the four kinds of karma proclaimed by me after personal realization with direct knowledge."

After hearing this, Punna, a son of the Koliyan clan and an ox-functioning ascetic, said to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama! The Dharma has been clarified in many ways by Master Gotama as though he were turning upright what had been tipped over, revealing the hidden, showing the way to one who is lost, holding up a lamp in the darkness for those with eyes to see.

"I go to Master Gotama for refuge and to the Dharma and to the Sangha of followers. From today let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone to him for refuge for life."

But Seniya the naked dog-function ascetic said: "Magnificent, Master Gotama!... The Dharma has been clarified in many ways by Master Gotama as though he were turning upright what had been tipped over, revealing the hidden, showing the way to one who is lost, holding up a lamp in the darkness for those with eyes to see.

"I go to Master Gotama for refuge and to the Dhamma and to the Sangha of followers. I would receive the going forth under Master Gotama and the full admission as a monk."

The Buddha said, "Seniya, one who has previously belonged to another religion and wants the going forth and the full admission in this Dharma and Discipline has to live on probation for four months. At the end of the four months monks who are satisfied in their minds give the novice the ceremony of going forth into homelessness and also the full admission to the monks' state. During the probation period, a difference in persons has become known to me in this."

Seniya said, "Honored one, if those who belonged formerly to another religion and want the going forth and the full admission in this Dharma and Discipline live on probation for four months and at the end of four months monks who are satisfied in their minds give them the going forth ceremony into homelessness and the full admission to the monks' state, then I will live on probation for four years and at the end of the four years let monks who are satisfied in their minds give me the going forth into homelessness and the full admission to the monks' state."

Seniya the naked dog-function ascetic received the going forth under the Blessed One, and he received the full admission. And not long after his full admission, after dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and self-controlled, the venerable Seniya by personal realization with direct knowledge immediately and directly entered and abided in that supreme goal of the holy life for the sake of which relatives rightly go forth from the home life into homelessness. He had direct knowledge thus: "Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this to come."

And the venerable Seniya became one of the arhats.

Mailbag Monday Abundance Checks

Todays letter comes from Estrella Amante, she writes

"I saw your version of The Abundance Check on your Facebook Fan Page. Would love to know how your version works for your clients. The Abundance Check has been successful for many being non-specific so as not to limit the manifestation. Having it be specific changes the original intent, so it might become even more of a powerhouse. "

"How did you find out about it? Of course I'd be ultimately flattered if you saw it on my blog or listened to[name removed] recent blogtalk radio show when he mentioned it. Glad the check concept is getting around! People like it, it helps them stay focused, and it works! "

Thanks for your question. For those that have never heard of these tools, Abundance Checks are checks that you write to yourself from a Higher Power such as God, the Universe, the Law of Attraction, etc... They can be written for either a specific amount or in some cases with no amount at all. People who use them often use their own personal checks, a blank check printed online, or even a blank check drawn on paper.

Filling the check out to yourself is an act of faith. It is not done without the absolute belief that you can have what you are asking for. If you do not truly believe that you deserve abundance or cannot attract it into your life, then you won't. Those who claim success with abundance checks often find that though they may not get the million-dollars they ask for they will often get a lesser amount that they need.

I often make the practice of writing abundance checks to myself into a little ritual. On the day of the New Moon, I will fill out the check at my altar, anoint it with money-drawing oils and then smoke it in incense while making my prayer/petition for abundance. When I am done, I will fold the paper towards me three times and leave the abundance check on my prosperity altar. The check will remain on my prosperity altar until the Full Moon at which time I will burn the check asking that as it burns away to nothing may my debt likewise dwindle down to nothing.

I first heard about Abundance Checks when I was a member of a social network site for Wiccans, Witches, and Pagans called Covenspace. One of my online friends named Amber M. wrote a blog entry about them and I have been using regularly using abundance checks since then. Later I also read about them in The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne (pages 98-99).

As you can see, Estrella, I did not learn about Abundance Checks from you; especially since I have no idea who you are, nor have I read your blog. As far as the radio show you mentioned, I have only listened to one episode in which both the host and the guest seriously mislead their listeners with erroneous information about the beliefs and practices of Hoodoo. However, that is the subject of another blog entirely and I will not go into that here at this time.

ON THE OCCASION OF THE MARTYRDOM OF SAYYIDAH FATIMAH ZAHRA (SA) (1431/2010)

In the above-mentioned verse, God Almighty has desired us to be enlightened with the greatness of the Ahlul-Bait in such a way that maybe such a manner and meaning is not found in any other verse, i.e. its placement within and amongst the verses which are directly addressing the wives of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w). Maybe God Almighty wishes to distinguish and describe the different members of his household. Amongst them are his wives who haven't been labelled as his Ahlul-Bait, regarding whom there have been particular laws and instructions revealed, and considering their circumstances and situations, such specific guidance was required for them. And this particular verse in question introduces us to those great personalities who Allah Almighty has bestowed infallibility and purity, and has made them as the ultimate role models for our guidance. This verse with the Tradition of the Cloak (Hadeeth-e-Kisa) further clarifies the greatness of Lady Fatimah Zahra (s.a), in that those magnificent personalities who are the subject of this verse, their central point and axis is Lady Fatimah (s.a). In other words, she is the centre and the core of infallibility and purity.

It was obvious from her very birth that she possessed all those qualities which enabled her to rise quickly through all the levels of greatness. She was the companion of her mother Sayyidah Khadijah (s.a) when she was in her womb. She was the daughter of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w), who gave him what he missed from his mother since her early death in his childhood, and her compassion, affection and kindness. By being his daughter she was also possessed all those deep and lofty virtues, that a dear beloved daughter should have, while also supporting him by being the mother figure. As such, it was narrated that THE HOLY PROPHET (S.A.W.W) SAID ABOUT HER: "FATIMAH IS THE MOTHER OF HER FATHER". In such a manner, Lady Fatimah (s.a) is the ultimate role model of all daughters in the school of life.

And when she arrived at the house of Ameer-ul-Momineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s) as his wife, she held all those virtues and qualities which a loyal and sincere wife ought to have, by which she becomes the source of tranquillity and trust and peace of mind for her husband, and she bestowed this upon her husband Ameer-ul-Momineen (a.s) with flawlessness and perfection. The result of this was that ALLAH ALMIGHTY MADE IT FORBIDDEN UPON AMEER-UL-MOMINEEN (A.S) TO TAKE ANOTHER WIFE APART FROM SAYYIDAH ZAHRA (S.A) DURING HER LIFETIME.

As a mother, she fulfilled all her responsibilities of motherhood and raising her children, and the outcome of such dedication was not just Imam Hassan (a.s) and Imam Hussain (a.s) - they were divinely appointed Imams - ONE NEED ONLY LOOK AT HER DAUGHTER SAYYIDAH ZAINAB (S.A). AN EXAMINATION OF EVERY MOMENT OF HER LIFE WOULD LEAD US TO THE CONCLUSION THAT HER TITLE AS "THANI-E-ZAHRA" (THE SECOND FATIMAH ZAHRA) IS NO EXAGGERATION.

Sayyidah Zahra (s.a) had provided in her very brief lifetime in this world such a lesson to all the women of the world, which probably no other educated, intellectual, scholarly (in religion and secular affairs) woman of a long life can be presented to even come close to her, and nor can any other woman be presented to become the paradigm of womanhood as she was.

It is the duty of my Muslim and Momin daughters to take the life of Sayyidah Fatimah (s.a) as their guiding light, and to learn from her the way to encounter the many stages and obstacles of life. Today, many dirty attempts are being made to keep the women away from her truth. By using the fancy slogans of freedom, liberty, education, upbringing, advancement, urbanism, culture, they are deceiving the women and diverting them from the right path, which only results in the destruction of women, and deprivation from the understanding of her reality. In the name of freedom, they are conspiring to make women the provision of the evil eyes of irreligious and sinful men. With the excuse of education, women are made to mix and mingle with Non-Mahram men. And in the name of urbanism and civility, women are made to take on such a way of life and personality that will destroy her life forever.

To find such demoralizing customs and cultures in the world, The God-fearing nations, are against the very founding and objectives of the creation of the world. Advancement of humanity will not be found in the distancing of religion. Humanities advancement, superiority in knowledge and technology, is hidden in sincerity with love of ones native country and noble objective. It is the responsibility and duty of the intellectuals and scholars to correct the generations to come and to stop them from moving off the right path, by taking all possible positive steps.

I pray that Allah Almighty grant my daughters the opportunity and success in following the footsteps of Sayyidah Zahra (s.a). (Ameen).
