It seems that few weeks go by without the loss of another screen great and sadly this week was no different with the passing of director Mike Nichols. You can read our tribute from Deputy Film Ed Darryl Griffiths here.
In other news...
Sony Pictures is setting up a new version of George Orwell's dystopian classic novel 1984. The fantastic Paul Greengrass is set to direct, and Scott Rudin is producing with Gina Rosenblum. They've also got their writer James Graham, who wrote the book for the Broadway-bound musical Finding Neverland.
There's a trailer out for Strange Magic! What's Strange Magic I hear you ask...
*waits til you ask...*
Funny you should ask! Goblins, elves, fairies and imps collide battle over a powerful potion, with big names like Alan Cumming and Evan Rachel Wood providing the voices for the Lucasfilm production.
On TV, Luther has hit the headlines for a couple of reasons. First comes news that it's getting a US remake. Now before you shudder and try to work out how they're going to make a mess of it, bear in mind that it will be written/executive produced by the original series' creator Neil Cross and the British series' star, Idris Elba, is on board as executive producer.
Hot on the heels of that news, the BBC announce two NEW 1 hour specials of Luther for BBC One, also starring Idris Elba and written by Neil Cross. When asked about the much anticipated return of the hugely popular show, Cross said, "Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."
And finally, cue major excitement in TheCultDen office as we start to plan our downtime viewing to fit in another show (yes, we are allowed to watch TV just for fun... sometimes).
Seems the cat's out of the wet paper bag. I'm doing some episodes of Veep with the funniest and best cast on TV. I have not yet been fired.
