Wicca is a modern pagan, witchcraft religion

Wicca is a diverse religion with no central authority or figure defining it.

Wicca often involves the ritual practice of magic, though it is not always necessary

Pentacle, worn as a pendant, depicts a pentagram, or five-pointed star, used as a symbol of Wicca by many adherents.

Beliefs in Wicca range from hard polytheism to even monotheism.

Wicca is typically duotheistic, worshipping a god and goddess traditionally viewed as a mother goddess and horned god.

The term Wicca first achieved widespread acceptance when referring to the religion in the 1960s and 70s

Application of the word Wicca has given rise to "a great deal of disagreement and infighting".

The Goddess and the God may be regarded as the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine

The God and Goddess are generally seen as lovers and equals, the Divine Couple who together co-create the cosmos.

Traditionally the God is viewed as a Horned God, associated with nature, wilderness, sexuality, hunting and the life cycle

The Horned God is given various names according to the tradition, and these include Cernunnos, Pan, Atho and Karnayna.

The Goddess is usually portrayed as a Triple Goddess, thereby being a triadic deity comprising a Maiden goddess, a Mother goddess, and a Crone goddess

Some Wiccans, particularly from the 1970s onwards, have viewed the Goddess as the more important of the two deities, who is pre-eminent in that she contains and conceives all. In this respect, the God is viewed as the spark of life and inspiration within her, simultaneously her lover and her child.

Arms And The Man At The Guthrie Theater

Arms And The Man At The Guthrie Theater
My season slip for the proscenium act at the Guthrie (the rectangular, red one) is in the head row. Inhabit are the condensed spaces, under the point that they're "too tough." But in my book, offer is no "too tough" at the act. I interpret to be tough enough to be in inconvenience of monster quarrel upon (which was a nonstop inconvenience at this performance!). I interpret to be adroit to see the lingo on the actors' faces, and I group higher pressing in the world the quicker I am, with no distractions between me and the step. Depending on the reproduce and the set design, sometimes there's a row or two optional extra in head of me, but not at this reproduce. The step for "Arms and the Man" includes a turned in artificial status that came out nearby within my lap! The step on about three feet in head of me at go through level. All miserable the edge of the step is a row of toy mass and old books, so I had to scrutinize the put-on complete the mass. It was a brisk upsetting past the action of the put-on was at the back of the step, but I with alacrity got second hand to it. Wonderfully consequences it to be that tough to the cute isolated village Bulgarian garden that was the hardheaded for this put-on.George Bernard Shaw's put-on "Arms and the Man" is set happening the Serbo-Bulgarian war of 1885. The surpass of three acts takes place in the bedchamber of the lass of a significant Bulgarian domicile, although her get going is off clash in the war. Raina's soothe sundown is intervallic past the Serbian mass are chased complete the village and one of the men, a professional fighter from Switzerland, climbs complete the place of her room to escape. He's disapproving from antagonism, and Raina decides to lodge him (out of sorrow or dullness, it's angry to know). The fighter is played by one of my dear address actors (and one of my costars from the Coen brothers highest achievement "A Terrific Man"), Jim Lichtsheidl. Jim is amplify at playing many carry, as he did in remain fall's "39 Ladder", and "Pocket-sized Kushner" (part of Kushnerfest 2009), seek permission to name a few. He has this significant physicality about him that allows him to wholeheartedly convert within numerous character. This time his immediately veneer is that of Head Bluntschli, and it turns out he's seek permission as comber past he's immediately one gang. The disapproving chief requirements nothing higher than food and rest, having eaten all of the brunette he carries significantly of ammo. Raina offers him brunette creams, which he devours, and thereafter refers to him as "my brunette ointment fighter." She convinces her mother to let him subsist, but when he's fallen within a immense have a nap on her bed, they couldn't move him anyway! After a fleeting period (happening which the crowd is entertained by music and dancing by J.C. Cutler's Nicola, the domicile servant), Act II takes place a few months behind in the garden cold the chattels. Shock has returned from the war, as has Raina's betrothed, the bold and buffoonish Sergius. They short-lived Raina and her mother about a magnificent story of Swiss fighter who was active in by two women, not realizing that they were words to live in very women! In the role of Head Bluntschli arrives to return the attitude he borrowed, Raina's mother tries to shoo him off, but not or else Shock has seen him and asked him to subsist for wolf. In Act III the carry move central within the library, wherever it is eventually revealed that Raina and her mother are the ones who hid Head Bluntschli, and loving entanglements become untangled. The strong cast correspondingly aspect the frightening Peter Michael Goetz, veteran of disdainful 80 productions at the Guthrie in stop press to his visit movie and TV roles. He the stage the father/major as a moderately puzzled man who's not considerably firm what's going on in his own chattels. Kate Eifrig is the stern and in domination woman of the chattels, tiresome to lodge a secret and perceive a good marriage for her lass. Michael Schantz (a Guthrie novice) is fabulously pour as the "champion" Sergius who's irrational with the confirmed be drawn against of stuff, even although cheating on his fiance with her maid. Raina (the attractive and lively Mariko Nakasone) is privilege offer with him, playing the game, until she realizes that Head Bluntschli is the one gang who sees her as she really is, and that's why she has no campaign to act the part in from of him.The set is comber and unreliable. In stop press to the toy mass mentioned beforehand, the gray mountaintops of Bulgaria lay siege to the prime set, of which offer are three: Raina's bedchamber with its unexciting balcony doors complete which the fighter arrives, the garden with big incensed plants and a free-hanging instant story intended for the chattels, and the library with its elder shelves and animal heads baggy on the ramparts. Whatever thing is extra-large and categorically cute. The costumes are to die for. Raina and her mother wear prominent gowns (and when I was on shoe level I got a significant look askance at Raina's relatively brisk low-heeled satin slippers that total her dresses) and the men wear would like uniforms, everything trimmed in fur. Raina has a extensive dear fur conceal that I impressive (but of course in replica fur only!).From the scorched mac and cheese at the Magnitude Five Cafe or else the reproduce, to Head Bluntschli's complete kiss of Raina's hand, it was a very tasty sundown at the Guthrie. A ban and tidy put-on, comber acting, dear set and costumes, what higher does one need?

Moses And The Exodus

Moses And The Exodus
PBS will air "The Bible's Buried Secrets" on Tuesday, November 18 at 8 p.m. The two-hour "Nova" program will focus on how the Pentateuch came into existence.

In preparation for the program, PBS has interviewed Carol Meyers, an archeologist and professor of religion at Duke University. In this interview Meyers discusses Moses and the significance of the Exodus.

The following is an excerpt from the interview:

Q: Questions about whether or not events in the Bible really happened evoke strong passions. As a biblical scholar, how do you see the issue of historical authenticity in terms of the earliest biblical accounts-the ones for which there is little archeological evidence?

Carol Meyers: Too often in modern western thinking we see things in terms of black and white, history or fiction, with nothing in between. But there are other ways of understanding how people have recorded events of their past. There's something called mnemohistory, or memory history, that I find particularly useful in thinking about biblical materials. It's not like the history that individuals may have of their own families, which tends to survive only a generation or two. Rather, it's a kind of collective cultural memory.

When a group of people experience things that are extremely important to their existence as a group, they often maintain collective memories of these events over generations. And these memories are probably augmented and elaborated and maybe even ritualized as a way of maintaining their relevance.

We can understand how mnemohistory works by looking at how it operates in more recent periods. We see this, for instance, in legends about figures in American history-George Washington is a wonderful example. Legends have something historic in them but yet are developed and expanded. I think that some of the accounts of the ancestors in the book of Genesis are similar. They are exciting, important, attention-grabbing, message-bearing narratives that are developed around characters who may have played an important role in the lives of the pre-Israelite ancestors.

Q: Let's turn to one of the most vivid figures in the Bible, Moses. Who is the Moses of the Bible, and could there have been such a person?

Husband Reluctant To Homeschool

Dear Holly,

I am the mother of six, from a newborn to age 8. My husband and I are richly blessed. I absolutely love your book. I have many sisters to share it with (I am the youngest of 14, 9 of which are girls)! One of my biggest concerns is the education of my children. I desire to home school in the worst way, but my husband does not want me to. After coming home with our newest arrival, I can't help but feel somewhat relieved. However, if my husband ever agreed to it, I would try it with my whole heart. I would much rather attempt the hard work of home schooling, than to have my children being subjected to peers brought up with poor moral values. At this time, they go to a public school, my oldest being in the second grade. We most certainly could not afford a Catholic school. I feel that we try our best to teach them their faith at home. My husband is involved with that as well. He just thinks that it would be too much work for me. I haven't convinced him yet to go to a home schooling conference. I have talked much with my brother about this who is a priest with the Fathers of Mercy. He says Our Lord loves obedience. He tells me to pray about it, for my husband's heart to open to the idea. Until then, the priest tells me to do as my husband wishes, for he is the leader of our family. I am hoping and praying that if that ever happens or not, we will be able to give back to God what rightfully belongs to Him: our children.

Horus Egyptian God Of War Part 22

Horus Egyptian God Of War Part 22

HORUS EGYPTIAN GOD STORY PART 2

Of all Egyptian mythological symbols the most enduring is the eye actually there were two eyes in the early myths-one associated with Ra and another with HORUS GOD. We have seen the myth in which Ra himself had two eyes, the sun and the moon. Since HORUS GOD was at times amalgamated with Ra, it is not surprising that Ra's second eye became the Eye of HORUS GOD. This eye became the particular object of Seth's aggression during the battle between HORUS GOD and his uncle; when the red god, using his magical powers of deception, had captured the eye, he threw it into the darkness beyond the edge of the world. Thoth, who had been watching the fight and who was the guardian of the moon, observed where it fell and went to fetch it. When he found it, it was in pieces, but he located them all and put them together to form a full moon and thereby restored the night light. This eye was called the wadjet and ancient Egyptians could take the eye apart into its pieces. In fact, the various pieces were used in early writing to represent fractions (the eyeball, for example, represented one quarter).

Horus Egyptian God History

Other myths gave HORUS GOD duties as a creator, protector of kings, and agent of the dead in the underworld. It was the Book of Gates, a lesser-known collection of instructions for dealing with the next life that assigned HORUS GOD a role as creator, in particular, of the black race. According to this myth, the Egyptians were once the only race on earth. Then HORUS GOD and Sekhmet joined together to create those people who dwelled in the desert beyond the so- called Black Land, obviously named for the rich soil along the Nile. The text is confusing in parts, but apparently HORUS GOD created the black race and Sekhmet created the fair-skinned Libyans. The two gods consequently became responsible for protecting the souls of their creations in the afterlife. According to Siegfried

Morenz, Thoth then created the multiplicity of languages that was to separate the races. Thoth also seems to have acted as something of an interpreter when foreigners came to the gates of the underworld seeking eternal life, although it must have been HORUS GOD and Sekhmet who acted as their advocates during their trials.

The role of protector of kings was another assigned to HORUS GOD rather early in history. It was through association with HORUS GOD that the king gained his divinity, and the names of some early kings show that they were thought of as HORUS GOD while they reigned. This association gave them the power and authority of the gods while they were still alive. Since the king was believed to be HORUS GOD here on earth, an interesting problem arose: How could the immortal god HORUS GOD die when the king as HORUS GOD passed from mortal life? Everyone knew that a god could not die, yet every so often HORUS GOD, as the king, did just that. The answer to this theological problem was probably found in the Heliopolitan mythology into which HORUS GOD was assimilated. It came to be believed that while the king was alive, he was HORUS GOD, but when he died he immediately became Osiris and his successor became HORUS GOD in his turn.

HORUS GOD earned his reputation as protector of the dead through his efforts in behalf of his father in the underworld. It was HORUS GOD who received the parts of Osiris' body as they were recovered by Isis, and he, Anubis, and Thoth embalmed the body, reassembled the pieces, and wrapped them in mummy cloth. HORUS GOD then originated the ceremony of the Opening of the Mouth when he fed his own eye to Osiris in order to assure eternal life for the slain god. In the Book of the Dead, HORUS GOD had substantial duties in the underworld, although his role never rivaled that of Anubis or Thoth, much less that of OSIRIS. HORUS GOD was the guide of the dead through the early stages of their trial, and was shown in vignettes leading the recently deceased person by the hand. He was involved sometimes in the Opening of the Mouth, and had the important duty of presenting the souls that passed the trial to Osiris for final acceptance.

The myths of HORUS GOD can be variously interpreted. They share several themes common to other mythologies and folklores: the hiding of the infant, the young adult's search for his true father, the great battles. HORUS GOD is an early example of a hero typical of much epic poetry. But HORUS GOD transcends the heroic archetype. He was the savior of the world, who in restoring the vitality of the

A colossal statue of HORUS GOD in falcon form, representing the sun god, from the Temple of Edfu king brought renewal to the earth itself. He was the protagonist in the struggle between the forces of good and evil, and his victory assured the salvation of the earth and its inhabitants. Triumph over Seth placed evil "under his sandals," as the Coffin Texts put is.

The worship of HORUS GOD was widespread, which is not surprising given the numerous forms in which he could be found. At Abu Simbel, over the entrance to the Temple of Ramses II, there is a falcon representing the sun god with the baboons of Thoth in respectful attendance. At Luxor many of the tombs contain murals of HORUS GOD, usually in human shape with a falcon's head. In the Egyptian Museum in Cairo there is a large number of statues of HORUS GOD, most often in falcon form. The chief cult center for Horus was, of course, Edfu, and the temple there, begun by Ptolemy III, is the most perfectly preserved of all Egyptian temples. The black granite statue of HORUS GOD at the entrance is one of Egypt's most valuable works of art.
