THE PERSONALITY AND LIFETIME OF NAHUMAlmost nothing about Nahum is known, but he must have delivered his prophecies over a period of time between 710 and 660 B.C.

* Since Nahum predicted the defeat of Nineveh's armies if they attacked Jerusalem (1:11-15), then Nahum must have been doing some of his preaching preaching BEFORE 701 B.C. when Assyria did that very thing and was miraculously defeated (2 Kings 18-19).
* On the other hand, since Nahum prophesied that Nineveh would be destroyed just like the Egyptian city of Thebes, Nahum must have also been preaching AFTER 666-663 B.C. when Thebes was conquered by the Assyrians.

THE HISTORY OF NINEVEH2250-800 B.C. Nineveh (with Babylon) existed as the world headquarters of satanism.790 B.C. Nineveh was visited by Jonah and repented.722 B.C. Nineveh (capital of Assyria) conquered Israel (10 northern tribes).720-650 B.C. Nineveh was warned and criticized by Nahum.701 B.C. Nineveh/Assyria almost conquered Jerusalem, but God miraculously answered Hezekiah and Isaiah's prayers and sent His angel to destroy 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (2 Kings 18-19).625-612 B.C. Nineveh is threatened and attacked repeatedly by Elamites, Babylonians, Medes, and Sythians.612 B.C.Nineveh was conquered and burned by the Medes and Babylonians. It was only thinly populated for a while afterwards, and then forgotten altogether, its ruins buried out of sight by the forces of nature. It was forgotten so thoroughly that, until excavations in 1820, no one even knew where Nineveh once stood.401 B.C.Nineveh was in such rubble that the Greek general, Xenophon, and his men passed by it and assumed it was some old Parthian city in ruins.

* Until the excavations at Nineveh in1846, a good number of history scholars and Bible critics suggested that Nineveh might have never even existed (so thorough was its destruction!).

[Speech by Nineveh discoverer and archaeologist Austen Henry Layard, February 9, 1854, when given the honored status as a "Freeman" of London] "Archaeology, if pursued in a liberal spirit, becomes of the utmost importance, as illustrating the history of mankind. [Great applause.] I confess that, sanguine as I was as to the results of my researches amongst the ruins on the Tigris and Euphrates, I could not, nor, indeed, probably could any human being, have anticipated the results which they produced. I do not say this in self-praise. I consider myself but an humble agent, whose good fortune it has been to labour successfully in bringing about those results. I could not doubt that every spade-ful of dirt which was removed from those vast remains would tend to confirm the truth of prophecy and to illustrate the meaning of Scripture. But who could have believed that records themselves should have been found which, as to the minuteness of their details and the wonderful accuracy of their statements should confirm almost word for word the very text of Scripture? And remember that these were no fabrications of a later date in monuments centuries after the deeds which they professed to relate had taken place, but records engraved by those who had actually taken part in them."

THE MESSAGE OF NAHUMGOD IS FRIGHTENING, BUT GOOD"1:1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite."2 God is JEALOUS, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is FURIOUS; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies."3 THE LORD IS SLOW TO ANGER, and GREAT IN POWER, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet."4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth."5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein."6 Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him."7 THE LORD IS GOOD, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place ther, and darkness shall pursue his enemies."

KING SENNACHARIB'S FAILED ATTACK ON JERUSALEM IN 701 B.C."11 There is one come out of thee "[King Sennacharib],"that imagineth evil against the Lord, a wicked counselor."12 Thus saith the Lord; Though they be quiet "[self-assured Assyrian armies]", and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through "[the angel of the Lord killed 185,000 troops in one night, 2 Kings 18-19]." Though I have afflicted thee "[Israelites]," I will afflict thee no more [there will be peace someday]."13 For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder "[no more threat from Assyria]."14 And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee "[Assyria]," that no more of thy name be sown [fame will not be spread abroad any more]: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile."15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! "[Good news is coming for God's people!]" O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off "[Assyria eventually destroyed, never a threat again, as in 612 B.C.].. Good news is always just around the corner for God's true people.

NINEVEH SHALL BE UTTERLY DESTROYED BY MANY WARS"2:1 He that dasheth in pieces "[the enemy general]"is come up before thy "[Nineveh's]" face: keep the munition "[fortress]," watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily "[get ready for battle]."2 For the Lord hath turned away "[back to its rightful place]" the excellency "[splendor]" of Jacob "[the people of Israel]," as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out "[enemies ransacked Israel]," and marred their vine branches."3 The shield of his "[the enemy general's]" mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken."4 The chariots shall rage in the streets "[chariots of Babylon and Persia had swords attached to their wheels]," they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the "lightnings ["traffic jam" of chariots with fiery arrows, etc.]."5 He "[the enemy general]" shall recount "[remember]" his worthies "[leading soldiers]:" they shall stumble in their walk "[hurrying];" they shall make haste to the wall ther "[to batter it down]," and the defence shall be prepared."6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved."7 And Huzzab "[a word we can't define today]" shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering "[beating]" upon their breasts."8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water "[like an oasis]:"yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back."9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture."10 She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness."11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion's whelp, and none made them afraid? "[Lions lived in those areas and were the symbols of strength]."12 The lion did "[used to]" tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin."13 Behold, I am against thee "[Nineveh]," saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard."3:1" Woe to the bloody city "[Nineveh]!" it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not "[victims never cease];"2 The noise of a whip "[of the enemy],"and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots."3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:"4 Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot "[spiritual harlotry in the form of satanic idolatry]", the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts."5 Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame."6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock."7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?"3:13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars."14 Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln "[get ready for battle]."15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts."16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away."17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are."18 Thy shepherds "[leaders]"slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust "[dead and buried]:" thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them."19 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee [a gesture of astonishment like hands over the face]: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?"

NINEVEH SHALL FALL TO ITS ENEMIES JUST LIKE THEBES FELL TO NINEVAH IN 663B.C."3:8 Art thou better than populous No "[Amon-No is an ancient name for Thebes]," that was situate among the rivers [branches of the Nie], that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?"9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put "[Somalia?]" and Lubim "[Lybia] "were thy helpers."10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains."11 Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy."12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater."
