Ancient Vatican Document Sheds New Light On Magi Story

An ancient document found in the Vatican archives casts new light on the story of the Nativity and the Three Wise Men who came to offer gifts to the infant Jesus, according to researchers, reports the Times, in an article published in the Australian.

The Revelation of the Magi, reputedly a first-hand account of their journey to pay tribute to the son of God, only now has been translated from ancient Syriac.

Brent Landau, professor of religious studies at the University of Oklahoma, spent two years deciphering the fragile manuscript.

It is an eighth-century copy of a story first written down nearly half a millennium earlier, less than 100 years after the Gospel of Matthew, the original source of the Bible story.

The newly translated tale differs in major respects from Matthew's very brief account.

The Magi of the Bible have long been associated with Persian mystics, but those in The Revelation are from much farther afield - from the semi-mythical land of Shir, now associated with ancient China.

They are said to be the descendants of Seth, the third son of Adam, and to belong to a sect that believed in silent prayer.

Perhaps the biggest divergence from the traditional Nativity story is that according to The Revelation there were "scores" of Magi.

It gives a detailed account of their prayers and rituals.

The story relates that Seth passed down a prophecy that a star would appear that would signal the birth of God in human form. The Magi waited thousands of years until the day the star appeared.

The Curse Of The Pharaohs

While in the employ of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, Howard Carter was excavating in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings. On the 4th of November, 1922 he came across a flight of stairs leading down to a blocked door covered in ancient seals.

On entering the tomb, on the 26th of November, the body of the boy king Tutankhamun was discovered along with a magnificent quantity of funerary goods.

But, as the door of the tomb was broken open, the Curse of the Pharaohs was also released... well, that's what the likes of Sir Alfred Conan Doyle believed at the time.

The first sign of the curse being let loose was when Howard Carter sent a messenger to his house. On approaching the house a small cry was heard and the messenger found a bird cage occupied by a live cobra. Symbolically the cobra was a sign of the Egyptian monarchy.

Carter's canary was dead in the cobra's mouth. This incident was reported in the New York Times in December 1922. Carter's house had been broken into: by the Royal Cobra as worn on the King's head - see photo above showing the cobra on the brow of Tutankhamun's gold mummy mask.

Within seven weeks of the tomb being opened, on the 5th of April 1923, the Earl of Carnarvon died from injuring a mosquito bite. Meanwhile at Highclere Castle in England Susie, his trusty dog, howled and died at exactly the same time.

The media quickly embraced the idea of the Curse of the Pharaohs. Conan Doyle, an occultist as well as the Sherlock Holmes author, spread the word. The novelist Mari Corelli warned that there would be dire consequences for anyone entering the previously sealed tomb.

People appeared to be falling like flies. Carnarvon's brother Aubrey Herbert died on his way to X-ray the royal mummy; Carter's right hand man, Arthur Mace, died; the American railroad magnate George Jay Gould, who had visited the tomb, died; the French Egyptologist, Georges Benedite, died of a fall after visiting the tomb... the list went on an on.

But was everything as it seemed?

Translations of various hieroglyphs were published in the media such as: "'They who enter this sacred tomb shall swift be visiting the wings of death.'"

Another curse stated: "Let the hand raised against my form be withered! Let them be destroyed who attack my name, my foundation, my effigies, the images like unto me!'"

Sadly these translations were all fictitious. There were differing opinions as to the reasons for the deaths. Carnarvon, for instance, was already a weak sick man - but some newspapers claimed he had pricked himself with a sharp object - while in the tomb - and this released micro-organisms laid dormant for 3000 years.

A Pharaohs curse or not? The Egyptologist Herbert E Winlock compiled a list of more down to earth explanations for each of the deaths. But whose to really say, there are always differing opinions about such subjects. In life there are those who are willing to believe and those who will never believe anything away from the 'normal' way of thinking.

Pantheacon 2013

Last weekend Chic and I had a fantastic time at Pantheacon, the largest indoor metaphysical, occult, pagan, and esoteric convention in the U.S., held every year in San Jose, California. The theme for the event this year was (very appropriately) "Co-operation, Tolerance, and Love." This was our second Pantheacon and as far as I am concerned, the event just keeps getting better. The convention is amazingly efficient and well organized.

We arrived on Thursday afternoon and had a restful evening. On Friday morning we headed down to Registration and the Green Room for badges, programs, etc. By early afternoon the Vendor Room was open and we ogled the various goods. (If you can't find something wonderful to buy at Pantheacon, you're just not trying at all.) Later we joined in a panel discussion on "Community Connections" with fellow Llewellyn authors Melanie Marquis, Donald Michael Kraig, Patricia Lafayllve, and Thea Sabin, with Elysia Gallo as our MC. The discussion was well received and I think we all learned something from it. That evening we headed off to the Llewellyn party to hobnob with some very cool folks.

In the evening we attended a lecture on "The Modern "> "De Mysteriis. "This was followed by an "Invocation of Thoth Hermes Mercury" in the Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn's suite.

Saturday morning I attended Holly Kraig's Intermediate Yoga class, which energized me for the day. And I needed it--because Chic's lecture on "Tarot Magic" later that afternoon was packed to the rafters. We quickly ran out of hand-outs (I had printed 65 copies) and some of our friends who had wanted to attend the lecture could not even get in the room. Immediately afterward we had a book signing at the Llewellyn Table just outside the Vendor Room. We spent Saturday evening socializing with old friends and meeting new ones.

Sunday morning I gave my lecture on "Enochian Color Magic" which also went very well. Later, our good friends in the Golden Dawn community managed to pull a fast one--we had a surprise appreciation dinner party for Chic in the OSOGD suite. Sam Webster's toast was deeply moving and Chic was caught totally unawares. We presented him with the gift of a statute of Hermes that was purchased at the convention. After the party we caught the last half-hour of Lon Milo Duquette's concert, "Songs of Love, Magick, and Devotion" at Club Max. Lon is fantastic (as always!).

We were back on a plane to Florida at a ridiculously early hour on Monday morning, but with lots of good energy from such a positive event. Many thanks to Glenn Turner and the Pantheacon staff for running and organizing such an incredible convention. (Again!)

(,..`*This listing is for our 12x18 cover size, with 500 sheets (1000 front and back) of 11x17 paper, in Chicago Screw Post binding; which uses 3 or more adjustable steel rods/screws to hold the paper in. This makes it quite easy to rearrange or remove paper at will,while maintaining the look of a sewn book.The posts can be expanded or shortened as desired. Step 2 - Choose your spine shape:

Step 3 - Choose your cover material:

~ Leather (deer, bison, cow etc in most colors)

~ Velvet* (most colors available)

~ Natural woven fiber fabric* = Cotton (so many options for prints!), hemp, bamboo, raw silk, rayon (made from wood pulp) - you name it.

*There may be some limitations to the design/detail options if choosing fabric instead of leather. As always, we will do everything in our power create what you ask for, or work with you to come up with a design that will work best with the fabric while still staying within your vision of a dream BOS.

Step 4 - Choose your end leaves:

This is the inside of the outer cover. Can be a custom image either provided by you or designed by us for you. Velvet - most colors/styles available (can be custom etched with any image you like). Other fabric in any print. Fancy paper - thousands of styles/colors available from papyrus to traditional hand marbled. End leaves come with coordinating ribbon edging.

Step 5 - Design your cover:

Message us with an attachment of a picture/sketch of your idea, or, just describe what youre thinking of in detail in the message and well put the sketch together for your approval. Then it will be sculpted (raised or carved depending on your design) onto the cover of your bos.

Note: Additional fees may apply due to size and intricacies of your design but well do our best to work with you. We dont seek out adding extra fees, but in some cases dreams take more work to come true!

Step 6 - Choose up to 4 special features:

~ Wrinkled/Distressed leather

~ Straps added to cover for the purpose of tying book closed.

~ 5 Permanent ribbon page markers (choose your colors)

~ Charms added to ends of your page markers (eg: pentacle, ankh, fairy, crescent moon)

~ Crystal/Stone beads added to the ends of your page markers (many choices available)

~ Flame deckling (aka burned paper edges - aged vellum paper suggested for best results)

All books are created by hand from start to finish, and ritually cleansed/blessed before being sent to their permanent home. They are heirloom quality, and meant to be passed down to future generations.

~Hand sewn binding: This is done in the "old way" - sewn on cords for optimal opening without damage to the spine, and made to withstand generations. This option does take a bit longer to create, however, well worth it. Larger Tomes, and those wanting more than 600 pages in this size should consider this option for its archival qualities.

~ Specialty paper available for Hand Sewn: heavy parchment in 65# weight and tree free paper made from agricultural bio-products/post consumer waste combined with one of the following: coffee, lemons, mangoes, or bananas (pics available).

~Specialty paper available for Screw Post: heavy (65lbs) parchment, cotton, linen, hemp, paper made from one of the following: coffee, lemons, mangoes, bananas, or 80% sugarcane fiber paper combined with agricultural bio-products/post consumer waste for completely tree free paper (pics available). ** Please note heavier weight paper is much stiffer and will have a "breaking in " period until it can lay as flat as possible.
