Dealing With Bigotry

I received a thought-provoking email from a reader in the Southern U.S. about her struggle around coming out as an atheist/agnostic and her understandable fears about how others will respond. I do not have any easy answers for her, but I want to share portions of her struggle and offer what little I can. I'll call her Rachel to help conceal her identity.

Rachel identifies herself as Hispanic and says that she was raised in one of those traditional Catholic families where questioning faith is simply not done. She describes herself as agnostic, but like most people who claim to be agnostic, I suspect that she is actually an agnostic atheist (see Understanding Atheism and Agnosticism).

ATHEISTS CONTINUE TO FACE BIGOTRY IN THE UNITED STATES

It is clear that Rachel feels oppressed by the religious majority, and I suspect many of us can relate.

It seems that so many of us, even including myself depending on who the audience is, will not proudly admit our non-theistic beliefs. I see so many Christians posting bible quotes and praising their Lord all day, every day on facebook. However, I feel that we do not have the same luxury. Do you know how much backlash I would get if I publicly endorsed the genius documentary, Religulous, by Bill Maher?This double-standard where Christians can flaunt their religion without fear of consequences while atheists must worry about everything from ostracization to physical assault for expressing ourselves is part of Christian privilege, and it is a very real problem. Most Christians are blind to it, and yet, most of us experience it daily.

Maybe it's because I'm in Texas, or maybe it's because I need to stop caring about what people think. Nonetheless, I'd like to examine why we are the most untrusted minority and why we don't also have the same rights that are given to racial minorities, the GLBT community, and so forth. Where is our freedom of speech? Where are our billboards and commercials?When I look at the Civil Rights movement and the LGBT movement, one of the things that stands out to me is that nobody gave these minorities rights until they demanded them and made it clear that they were not going to take no for an answer. Atheists have not done that yet. Another important lesson is that these struggles took considerable time. Unbelievably, it is still illegal in most states for same-sex couples to marry. Bigotry is ugly, and it has a way of sticking around.

REASON FOR OPTIMISM

The good news is that things are beginning to change. Membership in national groups like the Freedom From Religion Foundation is on the increase, and we have a solid presence on the Internet. The mainstream media has taken notice of atheism in a way that we haven't seen since Madalyn Murray O'Hair. We have books, billboards, and we will hopefully soon have a major Hollywood film. I know it isn't nearly enough, but it is a start.

As more of us realize what is at stake and refuse to remain silent in the face of Christian privilege and religiously-motivated bigotry, we are beginning to find our voice. The more of us who begin to speak out, the harder it will be for anyone to silence us. Bigotry becomes much harder to maintain when it is exposed for what it is.

I know it often seems like we must make a choice between hiding ourselves to avoid retaliation and being completely open about our atheism and risking it all. But there are points between these two extremes. The challenge for Rachel, and many of us, is how to strike the sort of balance with which we can live.

I've been interested to note the kind of language being used when reporters report in the recent weather disasters. Apparently it is all due to the Mighty Mississippi and its wrath, Gaia, and Mother Nature. LOL, why not throw in Pele and Poseidon while we're at it?

Speaking in the name of other gods is forbidden: "But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die." (Deuteronomy 18:20)

Swearing by other gods is forbidden: "That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:" (Joshua 23:7)

Changing the truth of God onto a lie is forbidden: "They exchanged God's truth for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen." (Romans 1:25)

I am glad He wrote down for us what He thinks, feels, and expects of us. I am glad I am a Christian, following Jesus and applying His biblical precepts to my life the best I can. Put simply, I'm glad I know Jesus. Do you?

The Asatru Kindred

Collegiate Dictionary defines Kindred as: A group of related individuals; Of a similar nature and character; Of the same ancestry. I would agree with that definition, but it is only partly true. The Asatru Kindred is the foundation for the new Asatru Nation, and as such, is the testing ground for the new tribes of our Folk. In the near future, the Kindred will prove to be the living entity that will survive the onslaught of Ragnarok.

In ancient times, our people survived as an extended family. As populations grew, these extended families joined together to form tribes. This tribe was, in essence, a group of extended families. Over the years they developed their own unique traits, value systems, heritage, traditions, religion, and other vital characteristics. As time wore on, and the people grew larger in numbers, these tribes joined with others of similar character and formed Nations. Again, this method served the people for many years.

During the late Viking Age, and with the coming of Christianity, things changed. The Christian Church was only able to assert its authority over the people by either bribing certain leaders of the Nations with promises of unlimited power and authority with the promise of Kingship, or they obtained the same ends with the use of force and treachery. So, one by one, the Nations submitted to absolute control of the Church through the clever manipulation of Kings.

To further assert this absolute control over the people, countries were formed. These were nothing more than geographical areas defined by lines on a map. They were, in effect, the geographical areas where the new Kings could wield absolute control. Any farther than that was claimed by a neighboring Kingdom. Over time, this led to the formation of towns and cities of such size that large numbers of people were needed just to serve the infrastructure of the Kingdoms. People left the ancestral farmlands to live in the cities and serve the Kings and their armies. Once the Folk lost their natural bond with the land, they lost their souls, and the power and influence of the Kings and the Church was absolute.

The ties which bound the tribes together common ancestry, religion, heritage and social structures were meaningless in the towns and cities. All that mattered is that you swore allegiance to the King and the country which he led. It goes without saying, that the great fratricidal wars of Europe and America could not have been fought without this artificial form of political control wielded by the Church and State.

Today, as Asatru asserts itself, we must learn from the lessons of the past. And to regain our freedoms, we must work hard to rebuild our ancestral tribes. The Kindred is vital to our success and survival as an indigenous people.

Sadly enough, although Asatru at this time is experiencing tremendous growth, many who return to their ancestral religion don't wish to join or found Kindreds. They prefer to worship the Holy Aesir and Vanir alone, or occasionally with a few others of like mind. They do not want to be bothered with commitments, or they do not want anyone depending on them, or they just do not have time for working with others. This article is not for them. This article is for those who are endowed with the spirit of Tyr and are willing to devote their lives to building the Nation of Asatru and serving the Folk. Sacrifice is what makes you an Asatruar, not convenience.

I hope that this article has been of some help in explaining both what one should do to form a Kindred, but also how an existing Kindred can avoid some of the mistakes that the Founders made back in the days when forming a Kindred was breaking new ground with no one to look to for advice and instruction.

As the Asatru Community grows, and it is at a rapid rate, the Folk will look to the Kindreds to provide them with a place to be with people of like mind and purpose; a place for spiritual growth, and a place to share common social values.

It is up to us to prepare for the future by promoting the formation and growth of healthy and vibrant Kindreds, and thus secure a future for our children on Midgard.

The Mystery of Rahu - a brief out-look.

Rahu and Ketu are referred to in the sacred literature as the demons who consumed nectar and became immortal. In almost all books of astrology of India they are referred to but have rarely been praised. It may be because of their mystic nature and a lot of mysterious stories associated with both these planets.

Infact it is the greatness of our Vedic sages that they have been able to invent exact points or nodes of moon cutting the earth's orbit of sun. The point where the moon's north node cuts the earth's axis in the zodiac and thus makes a shadow on the zodiac is called Rahu and the South node of the moon is called Ketu. Ironically Rahu, the North Node which is looking towards earth signifies Materialism and Ketu which is in to the Darkness, as it is reversely pointed looks like tail Or symbolically an inward look in to the subconsciousness Or signifies Spirituality as Opposed to Rahu and both nodes are always 180 3/4 apart in the 360 3/4 12-House divided Zodiac.

According to some advanced techniques of modern predictions, a lot of research has been conducted on the Positive effects of Rahu and many eminent astrologers such as K.N. Rao, Dr. David Frawley and many astro research councils have come out with lots of interesting aspects and significance of Rahu and Ketu in one's horoscope. No one can ever master astrology but our finer techniques of astrological predictions cannot improve unless we discussed with open mind through presentation our predictions as case studies and more over, the effects and significance of mystery planets like Rahu and Ketu still offer a lot of scope in research, further study and application of principles of predictions.

A brief account of what is given about Rahu and Ketu in the sacred literature of India is being outlined here. Nectar or amrita was churned out of the ocean (the story of Samudra Manthan). Poison too had come out with the nectar. That lethal poison could have destroyed the entire life on the life on the earth. Lord Shiva quaffed it off. He stored it in his neck as a result of which it became blue which is why one of the names of Lord Shiva is Lord Neelakantha.

It was decided to distribute the nectar to Gods and strengthen them against their fight with rakshas (demons). Without anyone noticing it at once, Rahu, and Ketu who were demons, joined the gods and partook of that nectar. When Lord Vishnu came to know of it further serving of nectar was not given to Rahu and Ketu. But they had enough consumed enough nectar to become immortal like gods. The Sun and the Moon had noticed this deceitful act of Rahu and Ketu and complained to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu pierced the abdomen of Rahu and chopped off the head of Ketu. But they did not die as they had become immortal.

The Sun and the Moon had reported against Rahu and Ketu to Lord Vishnu. But they had become immortal now. They prayed to the almighty to include them in the galaxy of planets. Their wish was granted. But they harboured ill will towards the sun and the Moon who had reported against them.

Note: From this story the relation between the luminaries, Sun and Moon and Rahu and Ketu gives us rich material to work on for our research.

ANOTHER VERSION

The Skanda Purana story of Rahu is a repetition of the same with one difference. Gods and Demons had decided to churn the ocean to extract nectar. The emphasis is that demons were as much a part of the effort to churn the ocean as gods. When nectar was got, Lord Vishnu decided to give nectar only to gods, not to demons. Rahu came to know of this decision. He assumed the shape of a god and entered the group of gods to drink nectar. Lord Vishnu cut off the head of Rahu.

PRAYER TO RAHU

Some Oriental scholars both of India and of the west hardly know that the stotras or Sanskrit hymns, poems, stanzas or poetical compositions give valuable clues, mostly predictive astrological clues about the planets. Here is a very fine, celebrated poem on Rahu with approximate English transliteration and the meaning given below it:

Rahurdnava Mantri Cha Simhikachittanandah!

Ardhakayah Sada Krodhi Chandraditya Vimardanah! (1)

O! Giver of happiness to Simhika (his mother), minister of demons, half-bodied, Rahu is the tormentor of the Sun and the Moon.

He, who recites these names, overcomes his troubles by a mere recitation of these names, gets sons, good health, prosperity, agricultural and cattle, wealth.

He who recites this stotras constantly gets his wishes fulfilled and lives up to the age of one hundred years (long age). That is the fruit of reciting this hymn.

In every place in the Old Testament where "SONS OF GOD" are

mentioned it refers to angels.

renown." Some translations yield the term "GIANTS OF OLD," yet still others refer to these angel/human hybrids as "nephilim."

Who, then, were these nephilim and who also were their fathers? We

see in Numbers 13:32-33 a brief picture of the character of these

"mighty men. And they ["Israelites"] brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants ther; and all the people that we saw in it are

men of great stature. And there we saw giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their ["nephilim"] sight." In Deuteronomy 2:19-21 we see a bit more. "And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon ["God speaking to the Israelites"], distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon

[Egypt] any possession; because I ["God"] have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession. That ["Egypt"] also was accounted a land of

giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims; A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead."

What have we learned so far? That the children of the angels and human women were quite tall and barbarous. They lived in Egypt apparently before the destruction of the last age by flood. The Ammonites succeeded the Nephilim and referred to the Nephilim as "ZAMZUMMIMS." It would appear that the destruction caused by the great flood -- the end of the last age -- was a direct result of the increasing evil done by humans and that evil appears to have come to a crescendo with the appearance on earth of the angel/human hybrid Nephilim. We have also learned that these angels "kept not their first estate, and left their habitation."

Who, then, are these angels who left their first estate? Various

discussion in Christian sources refer to these angels that have left their first estate. In the initial rebellion against God the leader of the rebellion was Satan/Lucifer. Lucifer and one-third of the angels were involved in that rebellion. These angels which have had sexual relations with the daughters of men are very clearly those under the guidance and leadership of Lucifer. We begin to see why a crescendo of evil in the world preceded the end of the last age by flood --

there were, according to the Bible's Old Testament, demonic/human

hybrids living on earth at the end of that age. Psalms 78:48-49

says, "He ["God"] gave up their ["human's"] cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, BY SENDING EVIL ANGELS AMONG THEM."

Could this possibly be? Could it be true that the "HUMANOIDS" from the UFOs are none other than the legions of demons of Lucifer? And if this is true, just as happened before the end of the last age, are we now seeing a repeat of history in our own time? Are there now, in our

midst, hybrid demon/human hybrids -- the "MIGHTY MEN OF OLD OF GREAT RENOWN"; the Nephilim? I think you know the answers to these questions.

In the book of Revelations are the acts of many Godly angels and Satan's demonic forces. It is fair to state that the book of Revelations is the description of the final battle between the forces of good and those of evil. In Revelations 12:7-10 we see, "And there was war in heaven:

And the great dragon was cast out, that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." In Revelations 12:12 we see what happens next"Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath,

because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." Finally we see in Revelations 13:4-

"And they ["humans just prior to the end of the current age"] worshipped the dragon ["Satan/Lucifer"] which gave power unto the beast ["the human (OR PERHAPS IT MIGHT BE NEPHILIM?) world dictator"]: and they [humans]

worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against

God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven."

Isaiah 14:12-17
